Sagittarius Horoscope for week of March 2, 2017

In his book The Horologicon, Mark Forsyth gathered "obscure but necessary" words that he dug out of old dictionaries. One of his discoveries is a perfect fit for you right now. It's "snudge," a verb that means to walk around with a pensive look on your face, appearing to be busy or in the midst of productive activity, when in fact you're just goofing off. I recommend it for two reasons: 1. It's important for your mental and physical health that you do a lot of nothing; that you bless yourself with a healing supply of refreshing emptiness. 2. It's important for your mental and physical health that you do this on the sly as much as possible; that you avoid being judged or criticized for it by others.

And, as G. David Howard put it, the only hard part about doing nothing is knowing when you're finished.

Sagittarius Horoscope for week of May 15, 2014

According to my reading of the astrological omens, you should draw inspiration from this Chinese proverb: "Never do anything standing that you can do sitting, or anything sitting that you can do lying down." In other words, Sagittarius, you need extra downtime. So please say NO to any influence that says, "Do it now! Be maniacally efficient! Multitask as if your life depended on it! The more active you are the more successful you will be!" Instead, give yourself ample opportunity to play and daydream and ruminate.

I do so little now I have a hard time believing I need to do less.

Overnight I had a dream I was in a shootout.  My opponent used a bolt-action hunting piece at me first, and when it jammed he pulled a revolver and blasted till he was out of ammo.  I had an automatic pistol and an extra clip, so when he saw me reload he knew it was over and gave up.

I don't know what this means in terms of my life.

The website that has this "game" is too slow and buggy to let me get back to my own entry.

Sagittarius Horoscope for week of May 9, 2013

Charlie Parker was a great jazz musician. As a saxophonist and composer, he was an influential innovator. Unfortunately, he also had an expensive heroin addiction. It interfered with his ability to achieve financial stability. There's a famous story about him showing a bystander two veins on his arm as he prepared to shoot up. "This one's my Cadillac," he confessed. "And this one's my house." I'm bringing this up, Sagittarius, in the hope that it will provide a healthy shock. Are you doing anything remotely like Charlie Parker? Are you pouring time and energy and money into an inferior form of pleasure or a trivial distraction that is undermining your ability to accomplish higher goals? If so, fix that glitch, please.

I keep asking myself why I can't get interested in anything that could make me some money. I guess that's a fatal flaw in my character.

Sagittarius Horoscope for week of February 21, 2013

Do you floss your teeth while you're meditating? Do you text-message and shave or put on make-up as you drive? Do you simultaneously eat a meal, pay your bills, watch TV, and exercise? If so, you are probably trying to move too fast and do too much. Even in normal times, that's no good. But in the coming week, it should be taboo. You need to slowwww wayyyy dowwwn, Sagittarius. You've got . . . to compel yourself . . . to do . . . one thing . . . at a time. I say this not just because your mental and physical and spiritual health depend on it. Certain crucial realizations about your future are on the verge of popping into your awareness -- but they will only pop if you are immersed in a calm and unhurried state.

I think the pace of my life is extremely slow. Although I did expedite matters on Friday when I dropped a resume off at a photography studio/tech services company in Jeff City.

Really, speed and time are not problems with me.

I took a walking and jogging course, and stayed with it in Florida for a while, but gave up when I moved here because the terrain isn't friendly for it. People cycle here or hike the trails rather than jog.

I did a 1.5 mile time trial in college. Took me thirteen minutes and change.

Ranger Me?!

News today that a crossover movie is coming this Spring from Japan that will bring together ALL the Power Rangers and ALL the Kamen/Masked Riders together for one grand epic...

All of a sudden I want a Tokusatsu costume. Which begs the question...what Ranger or Rider might you see me as?

It's weird seeing Navi Rawat (from Numb3rs) as a nasty villainess in Burn Notice. It's just a complete 180% turn from the previous role.

(Yes, I know they're LAST YEAR'S episodes. I don't have cable, okay?)

At least she isn't being typecast.

Another TV series that used to be regularly shown on Retro:

RUN FOR YOUR LIFE

Original Premise: A war veteran who became a successful lawyer has the shock of his life when he is diagnosed with a unavoidably fatal--and inoperable--condition. Luckily, it's still in its early latent stage, so he'll be healthy for a while. But his physician only gives him a year or so to live.

"I haven't taken a day off since Law School," the lawyer says.

"See if you can pack twenty years of living in twelve months," his doctor tells him back.

And so the man quits his practice, and goes out into the world on a perpetual whirlwind adventure. He takes on daredevil missions for ad hoc causes, such as smuggling spies out of hostile nations, or testing race cars, or guiding a sailboat out of the path of a hurricane--whatever needs to be done and done NOW. He'll take on any task where the reward justifies--and circumstance demands--the risk of a man's life.

Reimagined: He takes his situation to the Internet. He has a blog, which is virally popular, written under the pseudonym "The Runner". He has a top-of-the-line smartphone through which he gets his assignments. Since he's amassed loads of Frequent Flyer miles from his previous life, he can go anywhere in the world at any time. His readers across the web find missions for him and help him whereever they can. (Since he is a military veteran, this series can be plugged into the NCIS [nee JAG] continuity too!)

Back when I was a more active otaku I used to joke that we (my friends and I) wanted "Super Dimensional" lives but were probably more likely to get "Rumik World" ones. The problem with the "cool" stories is that they're also horribly dangerous ones. I love Chuck, but would you want to live in a Burbank where if you go to the big-box store for a barrel of cheese balls, you could wind up in a fight with master super spies? I love Criminal Minds, but would you want to be in a situation in which the BAU may be your only hope of surviving? Burn Notice is great--but would you want to live around these characters? Life On Mars...cool, but I don't know the British version. (In fact, my own "Hackett Continuum" was going to have some thematic parallels.)

I know this doesn't answer your question. Let's just say I'm still chewing on it.

A while ago here I voiced my desires to make a race car-based horror movie. Paul liked my initial premise, but thought it too expensive to pull off, and wanted to do something else, which I still may participate in if I get all the resources together.

Meanwhile, I'd come to the thought--on the racetrack smaller cars can easily, more safely, and less expensively handle the action. As some of the "track" will have to be rendered as miniature sets, that means that stunts and crashes can be done using miniatures, thus removing risk to players and stand-ins.

So I'm now thinking about using Legends and Baby Grand cars as the structural basis for the machines in the story/movie. There would be mockup cars for acting around that wouldn't have to be operational. Perhaps a truck-with-cockpit rig like as used in the Fast And The Furious movies for the actors to ride in and pretend to drive.

And since the Legends and Baby Grand cars use fiberglass bodies as designed, new bodies just for the movie can be designed and fabricated for these. Which means some room for artistic creativity.

I need more info. *Pokes around the Internet and ruminates...*

Remakes

Paul Francis had the remake of The A-Team on his DVD player during the Build Day party at his place yesterday.

Okay, it's generally agreed that the original show of the 1980s was dumb and mediocre at its very best. It was a modern-dress Western with low production values. It ran as long as it did because it was cheap to make and appealed to the lowest common denominator. I get that.

But it doesn't excuse Hollywood from making a "pitiful" feature film version.

I'm still a little tired from all the running done on Saturday and a little worn from the up-and-down weather we've had here. Storms pop up and roll through and break, and then pop up again and roll through.

At least it's not like most Mondays.

Wait.

And Wait.

...And Wait.

Went to the Tech School campus today to check on my status. Thanks to Jury Duty, I've lost my slot for the Summer Term and now am on the list for Fall.

I like having more time to prep...but I hate it that I've been so derailed that I don't know whether I can handle being a student again.
