Time for an audience participation topic: Paramount has abandoned their lawsuit against the party behind the AXANAR project.

In the wake of this, would you want to make a fan movie?  If so, what franchise?

...Yo ho ho and a pitcher of tea.

Got an external case for the hard drive of the long-departed computer FrankIntel's Monster today. And the old drive still seems to work. I hooked it up to Precious, got my Aidfile Recovery Pro running, and it was recognizing old data...

...but wouldn't actually start recovering the data without me bubbling in my activation key to Recovery Pro. I thought I'd done that years ago when I obtained the program. My options now: wait till Giveaway of the Day re-offers it and get a new key that way, or pay $70 to Aidfile for a new license to the program. Or hope that one of the OTHER recovery programs also works and has a valid activation key in place.

RUM-inating on the theme for a while.

Sagittarius Horoscope for week of April 24, 2014

If you happen to be an athlete, the coming week will not be a good time to headbutt a referee or take performance-enhancing drugs. If you hate to drive your car anywhere but in the fast lane, you will be wise to try the slower lanes for a while. If you are habitually inclined to skip steps, take short cuts, and look for loopholes, I advise you to instead try being thorough, methodical, and by-the-book. Catch my drift? In this phase of your astrological cycle, you will have a better chance at producing successful results if you are more prudent than usual. What?! A careful, discreet, strategic, judicious Sagittarius? Sure! Why not?

Sagittarius Horoscope for week of December 5, 2013

The standard dictionary says that "righteous" is a word that means virtuous and highly moral. The slang dictionary says that "righteous" describes someone or something that's absolutely genuine and wonderful. Urbandictionary.com suggests that "righteous" refers to the ultimate version of any type of experience, especially "sins of pleasure" like lust and greed. According to my analysis, the coming week will be jampacked with righteousness for you. Which of the three definitions will predominate? It's possible you will embody and attract all three types.

I've entered probably twenty Sweepstakes drawings so far this week, as a reaction to me giving up Publishers Clearinghouse till August.  Will it be greed or justice if I win something?

As said, I'm in the process of a switchover from one form of Internet connectivity to another, and that means a lot of bureaucratic finagling with our service provider...plus some financial outlays.

Got my first bill from the new service today.  Tomorrow I'll have to go to the office to link the accounts.  The amount of the bill is over $200 but that included hardware and installation and we're promised a $35/month rate.

Meanwhile, in the past weeks I've had to get tires on Moonshine fixed, a traffic citation paid, and several other unforseen expenses dealt with.  I'm not so much complaining about that, just frustrated that a time of year that I should be carefree about money and I just feel dread and worthlessness.

Sagittarius Horoscope for week of October 31, 2013

I had a dream that you were in the film O Brother, Where Art Thou? You were like the character played by George Clooney after he escaped from a prison chain gang. Can you picture it? You were wearing a striped jailbird suit, and a ball and chain were still cuffed around your ankle. But you were sort of free, too. You were on the lam, making your way from adventure to adventure as you eluded those who would throw you back in the slammer. You were not yet in the clear, but you seemed to be en route to total emancipation. I think this dream is an apt metaphorical depiction of your actual life right now. Could you somehow use it in designing your Halloween costume?

...But I'm not gonna let them catch me, no!/Not gonna let them catch The Midnight Ri~i~ider!

Sagittarius Horoscope for week of August 8, 2013

You have both a poetic and a cosmic license to stretch yourself further. It's best not to go too far, of course. You should stop yourself before you obliterate all boundaries and break all taboos and smash all precedents. But you've certainly got the blessings of fate if you seek to disregard some boundaries and shatter some taboos and outgrow some precedents. While you're at it, you might also want to shed a few pinched expectations and escape an irrelevant limitation or two. It's time to get as big and brave and brazen as you dare.

Not the first time something like this has happened. In fact, this was fodder for a commercial for replacement windshield wiper blades a long time ago.

For some years, my thinking was that if I were a terrorist, I'd probably get my gang to ram-raid into the airport perimeter near the terminal after the last departure of the night, so I could steal one of the freshly-refueled jets parked for the early morning flights. Airport police departments are usually at their weakest at that time and could easily be overwhelmed by just a few gunmen.

I don't think I'm saying anything that would actually compromise secrets...and in fact I hope that the justice establishment in this nation has already thought about this.

I just downloaded a paper model .PDF file from RapidShare, and noticed through my search for the file that a lot of hosting sites have been hit with takedown notices or Russian viruses. If you have your eye on a download, get it now--but be very careful about it.

ACTA in a Nutshell –

What is ACTA?  ACTA is the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. A new intellectual property enforcement treaty being negotiated by the United States, the European Community, Switzerland, and Japan, with Australia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada recently announcing that they will join in as well.

Why should you care about ACTA? Initial reports indicate that the treaty will have a very broad scope and will involve new tools targeting “Internet distribution and information technology.”

What is the goal of ACTA? Reportedly the goal is to create new legal standards of intellectual property enforcement, as well as increased international cooperation, an example of which would be an increase in information sharing between signatory countries’ law enforcement agencies.

Essential ACTA Resources

  • Read more about ACTA here: ACTA Fact Sheet
  • Read the authentic version of the ACTA text as of 15 April 2011, as finalized by participating countries here: ACTA Finalized Text
  • Follow the history of the treaty’s formation here: ACTA history
  • Read letters from U.S. Senator Ron Wyden wherein he challenges the constitutionality of ACTA: Letter 1 | Letter 2 | Read the Administration’s Response to Wyden’s First Letter here: Response
  • Watch a short informative video on ACTA: ACTA Video
  • Watch a lulzy video on ACTA: Lulzy Video

Say NO to ACTA. It is essential to spread awareness and get the word out on ACTA.

As a Christmas gift, my sister and brother-in-law gave me a copy of the American Heritage History Of World War Two which I had never owned before, in spite of my long years of interest in the period of history.

What is sparking this particular note here is a table that was calculated by the corporate contractor that the Nazi German government had running the Holocaust death camps. (Yes, THAT Schindler. Him and his peers.) They had calculated the profit for an "average" inmate who was put to death after a mere nine months of slave labor. I won't reproduce it here, because I'm sure it's available on-line somewhere and I could probably come back and link it if I want.

I decided to interpolate the data in the table to the here and now. First, I found a site that had foreign exchange rate data, which told me how much a ReichsMark was worth in Dollars before hostilities broke with America. Then, I found another site to give me inflation figures for the last seventy years.

Care to guess? How much was a human life worth to Mr. Schindler and his kind?

$45.50 in 2012 money. Less than most of my friends pay for their TV programming per month, I imagine. About a week's worth of groceries for my household.

Would you kill somebody for $45.50? How many people on this world now would answer "Yes" to that question? The only way to guarantee that everybody answer "No" is to raise everybody's standard of living to the level that a human life is more than that figure. It is too cheap in too many places for us to say "Never Again" and mean it.

Sagittarius Horoscope for week of December 8, 2011

Harvey Ball was a commercial artist who dreamed up the iconic image of the smiley face. He whipped it out in ten minutes one day in 1963. Unfortunately for him, he didn't trademark or copyright his creation, and as a result made only $45 from it, even as it became an archetypal image used millions of times all over the world. Keep his story in the back of your mind during the coming weeks, Sagittarius. I have a feeling you will be coming up with some innovative moves or original stuff, and I would be sad if you didn't get proper credit and recognition for your work.

The problem is that I'm not sure I trust legal professionals with my ideas. And too many other people don't want me to have ideas. But I love a good idea, when I see one happen.

This Virtual Petition at the White House website is about letting the Department of Transportation, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Customs Service relax their restrictions on importation of used cars from overseas.

Right now, unless the specific model is already being imported for the US Market, you can't buy a car overseas and bring it back to the US unless it already qualifies for Antique license plates. The petition would change the car age limit to 15 years, which wouldn't hurt the existing importers any, and allow safer and better cars to qualify for import (and match the laws on the books in Canada).

On Facebook this afternoon, I saw an ad for a site called SponsoredWHIPS.com and was curious about it. Their business is that, for a fee (which they don't mention in their ads) they will have your car customized and find a sponsor to advertise on it. Because of my curiosity about it, I applied at Facebook and got a phone call from one of their sales types. They wanted me to arrange payment then and there, over the phone, before doing any further business. As I don't have any income or money, I had to forgo the deal.

If I had the funds, I probably would have done it.

PS: After I wrote the above, I did a websearch and found evidence of loads of dissatisfied former clients, mainly people who paid money up front and for whom SWLLC never delivered what was promised. Thanks but NO THANKS.
