I hate when the firmware for my DSL modem overwrites the homepage information on my browser to give me an error message. When that happens, I have to purge the cookies and caches and restart, and then re-log into all my sites, which means remembering my passwords.

And when I get an error message from the modem, it usually doesn't mean anything because the problem it's warning me about has already been solved automatically. Sheesh.

Paid $110 today to shut off the account for the USB modems.  With seven months left in contract that will save us almost $240.

Can't bundle the plans we have left tho'.  AT&T stopped doing that, for some reason.

As said, I'm in the process of a switchover from one form of Internet connectivity to another, and that means a lot of bureaucratic finagling with our service provider...plus some financial outlays.

Got my first bill from the new service today.  Tomorrow I'll have to go to the office to link the accounts.  The amount of the bill is over $200 but that included hardware and installation and we're promised a $35/month rate.

Meanwhile, in the past weeks I've had to get tires on Moonshine fixed, a traffic citation paid, and several other unforseen expenses dealt with.  I'm not so much complaining about that, just frustrated that a time of year that I should be carefree about money and I just feel dread and worthlessness.

Goodbye Sierra Momentum Connect Device.

Hello Motorola NVG510 Wi-Fi DSL Gateway. Rather Manor now is U-Versatile.

Which means that I will be using this computer a lot more and maybe even posting actual posts on this blog more as well.

It took a lot of effort and money to get us here, and I'm very grateful for it, even if it means we have to scale back other plans we'd had this season.

As typical, on the first day of the new fiscal month I use two day's worth of bandwidth in the first few hours, doing a mix of things I've needed to do for weeks and thing I don't need to do at all.

I need to go with Dad to AT&T to renegotiate our plans.

If the login situation is fixed then you can "now hear this!"

My divisions of labor vis-a-vis my smartphone and my desktop PC are coalescing.

SMARTPHONE duties:
*) Facebook. Even though actual posting is easier on the PC (as well as access to archives), it's easier to check the ongoing activity with the smartphone...even if the Facebook app is lacking (it works better to use Chrome).

*) YouTube. Granted, the hair trigger on the phone itself makes it tough to navigate, and for some reason the app lacks features you need (it works better to use Chrome), but I seem to save a lot of data use by playing videos over the Smartphone. It won't play everything, tho'.

*) Dropbox. I'm still learning it, and it needs a Wi-Fi source for it to be efficient, but it streamlines use of the phone's camera, and I may play around with video shooting thanks to Dropbox.

PC duties:
*) E-Mail. The smartphone app is wonky; using Chrome on the smartphone at Hotmail is tedious and needlessly limited in functionality.

*) LiveJournal. I can read my Friends' page on the mobile version, but that's about it.

*) PCH.com and all Flash-based content providers. No Flash support on Android phones whatsoever.

More to come.

Ahoy!

For some reason LiveJournal is working better on a public computer than my own. Maybe they fixed it, or maybe I've got a systemic problem with either my computer or my ISP.

My internet connectivity just didn't dig my company over the last few days.

I don't know what the problem is but it's just so frustrating to muck about with this hardware and hope that it's working long enough for me to post something like this entry.

The end of the Fiscal Month (and with it the end of my bandwidth) is approaching so I won't be doing much online till later Sunday Evening. I'll probably sneak in here and there but don't expect to see me.

Due to bandwidth issues, I will be offline till after Wednesday. I apologize for any inconvenience from this predicament.

...Having to watch my bandwidth like a hawk knowing that to stay under the limit I'll probably have to live without Internet for a few days in the middle of the month, or...

...Having the DNS server suddenly drop off for a couple hours at a time every so often.

There has GOT to be a better way!

...It's because I'm forced to conserve bandwidth again, with it being the end of the fiscal month.

The weather causes this wireless connectivity apparatus to lose signals, especially heavy rain, or, as in today, wind blowing lots of stuff around the house. So a lot of times in the last few days I've wanted to go on line, I couldn't.

Now, I don't care so much.

Excitement for the day was a trek to take Mum up (and I do mean UP) English Mountain as a reward for her discharge. She'd never been there before.

I wanted to have pics here, but my camera was low on juice, again. Once we returned, I used the wonderful Radio Shack digital pocket multitester I got last year for mechanics class to examine every good AA battery I had and set aside only those with maximum charge for the camera. I'm sure I'll still need to buy new batteries soon, tho'. Don't want the heartbreak to happen again.

...as conserving bandwidth. I only have lass than half a gigabyte left for the fiscal month, which ends on Friday (or Thursday night, I hope!).

Let's see:

*) I don't have a paying job and I'm broke.

*) I've gotta stick around Rather Manor to help Mum with her problems. We MAY have submitted one of her books to a publisher for a reprint tonight, but we won't know for a while whether the effort was successful.

*) I play too many games online. I wish I could get as excited about something that actually made me a living.

*) Since I don't have money, I don't have much in the way of reasons to travel, and of course, no point in travelling very far when I do.

*) My Internet situation, while more stable than it was, is still lacking in functionality. I haven't been able to upload certain kinds of data from this computer to the 'Net. Thus I may have to give up the Reviewer Corps, or (more likely) find a workaround of one kind or another.

AT&T has the best customer service system in the world. I mean it. They hire terrific people and you can reach some of them 24/7.

But that nice, ardent, professional woman and her good work is lost on me today because her phone makes her sound like she's way in the back of a shipping container she shares with a stepdown power transformer.

Still, in spite of this difficulty and others I've endured over the last few weeks, I was able to on this day:

*) Pay the first Wireless Internet bill for Rather Manor (although it was past due)
*) Correct the billing information for the Wireless Internet account (so it wouldn't bounce back like the first bill did)
*) Link the Wireless Internet account with the Landline account for Rather Manor so
*) We might be able to BUNDLE services and save some moolah

And I did it on ATT.com, whose veracity measures are needlessly difficult for legitimate users while still leaving gaping holes for cyberfraudsters. Tho' I doubt there can be a lot gained from the information available to the phone company and the individual endusers.

Finally got a good evening of stable Internet connectivity tonight. Updated Mum's Kobo. Sorted my mail. Did a few other online things that needed to be done. Like this blog entry.

Bought it at HobbyTown in Knoxville at the IPMS meet Tuesday; got the usual club discount on it. With my Internet service interrupted badly by storms yesterday, I put it together and painted it tootsweet. Photos after more paint and decals.
