Writer's Block: Check It Out

My first digital camera--not the Olympus I use now but a no-name thingy I got a dozen years ago or so, back when I had a steady job and income. I never got to figure out how to use it, it was probably incompatible with my systems at the time and I eventually gave it to my brother who probably had as little success as I did with it.
(Yay, I made one of these!)

Unintended Autoportraiture
Mar. 30th, 2012 11:00 pm
At the Rusty Wallace Toyota dealership in Morristown, the showroom has on display this driving kit set of Mr. Wallace's; the helmet visor has his autograph. (For those of you who don't know NASCAR, he had been one of the stars on the track till just a few seasons ago; he's now a trackside personality for FOX Sports' coverage of the races, and his "ride" has since passed through the hands of Kurt Busch to Brad Keslowski.)
I tried taking a few photos of the suit overday for research and planning purposes, but as you can see, it was too bright around for me to avoid capturing reflections from the display case glass.
Birthday And Other Topics
Dec. 17th, 2011 09:39 pmYes, I turned 45 a couple days ago, and couldn't talk about it much here because of the fact that it was also the end of the fiscal month and I was out of bandwidth till the next day.
The cake was not a lie. Thanks Jessica!
My other main gift is a black hoodie. I tried to take a picture of myself in it, but was frustrated by the digital camera's failure to focus properly. It makes no difference as I plan to get some iron-on transfers and alter its aesthetics, and due photography will happen thence.
Bought myself some older model kits, which had been part of a stash that belonged to a modeler who is no longer with us. He bequeathed his holdings to our Knoxville IPMS chapter, and buddy Paul is selling them off with the proceeds split between the club and the man's heirs.

If It Isn't One Thing It's Another
Oct. 14th, 2011 11:46 pmThe weather causes this wireless connectivity apparatus to lose signals, especially heavy rain, or, as in today, wind blowing lots of stuff around the house. So a lot of times in the last few days I've wanted to go on line, I couldn't.
Now, I don't care so much.
Excitement for the day was a trek to take Mum up (and I do mean UP) English Mountain as a reward for her discharge. She'd never been there before.
I wanted to have pics here, but my camera was low on juice, again. Once we returned, I used the wonderful Radio Shack digital pocket multitester I got last year for mechanics class to examine every good AA battery I had and set aside only those with maximum charge for the camera. I'm sure I'll still need to buy new batteries soon, tho'. Don't want the heartbreak to happen again.

Welcome October/Old Tyme Saturday
Oct. 1st, 2011 08:20 pmHey.
Old Tyme Saturday is Jeff City's annual street party, which is sorta fun but not quite as much fun as it sounds. Yes, you have the prerequisites for such an event: lots of little tent booths packed up against one another, expensive snack food, charity appeals, lousy gospel music (lousy meaning that they try to give so much "weight" to the message that they can't be bothered to learn to perform music compentantly), obnoxious clowns, too few porta potties, on and on.
There are two main reasons why I go: the antique cars and the helium balloons. While I did take my camera, the antique car show was set up in a cramped parking lot that meant it was too crowded with both cars and people to allow good photography. (That and my camera's batteries are getting old and pooping out on me on shoots.) As for the balloons, I didn't get one because 1) the Fire Department had run out of helium gas, 2) USBank was running out of balloons, and I didn't want to deprive the kids, 3) I felt strange about the idea of getting one of the balloons a Cancer charity was offering. They had somehow gotten surplus foil balloons advertising a promotion involving Serta mattresses and the American Idol TV show. This was the first time I had ever seen in person anybody using foil balloons as giveaways.
I don't so much do Old Tyme Saturday for fun as much as I do it for exercize.

Tech. Support.
Jun. 21st, 2011 11:54 pmToday first thing when I get up I hear from my folks that family friend Jessica is having problems with her printer and her digital camera, and she wants me to come over and help. Turned out it wasn't really a problem as such...just the usual fact that computers are very logical and sophisticated idiots. But I got her systems back running, and she gave me a glass of iced tea and a file cabinet she wasn't using.
I am taking apart a paper blob that is strangling my inbox. I'll need to get a box of hanging folders.

No More Next Years
Apr. 19th, 2011 04:40 pm

When Mum and I were out today we noticed workmen were taking down and pulling out the fencing at this ballfield, which is only a block and a half from Rather Manor. So I came back with my camera.
The place was privately-owned, and eventually made superfluous when a larger public facility opened closer to Dandridge proper some years ago. This year the school district annexed the land; soon the place will be re-leveled for an expansion of the High School.
Today we pick up the trail where we left off: 25E at White Pine's Main Street. North on 25E, past the Expo Center, over the overpass for I-81, (now into Hamblen County) over the Airport loop overpass, past Walters State College and College Square Mall, then cross Cherokee Lake out of Morristown and Hamblen County into Bean Station and Grainger County. Going Northwest, it merges with Highway 11W (which goes east to Rogersville) and then splits off of it again (11W going west to Rutledge). Bringing us to the Clinch Mountain Hill Climb. Cross the Clinch River after that...the highway here is still under construction but will likely be finished by Autumn by the look of it...when it happens it will be four lanes from Hamblen County to the State Line.
After the construction zone we're in Claibourne County and going through Tazewell. I wanted to stop at the Tazewell Flea Market, but today it was too busy and there was no parking anywhere. So I continued on to Harrogate and made a flypast of Lincoln Memorial University.
Since we're practically on the Kentucky State Line, I'd thought about crossing the line and visiting Middlesboro, but decided that the weather was too good to waste the opportunity to haul the backstretch of the Trail lap. So from Harrogate, we took Steiner Highway West through Speedwell, La Follette, and Jacksboro. This is pretty country and an okay road; it's likely even better in the Autumn with the leaves changing color because of the good visibility.
I wanted to stop in La Follette or Jacksboro for a photo opportunity but there didn't seem to be a good place handy. Just after Jacksboro, the Trail merges with I-75 South and that takes us to US 441 South at Lake City...the road through Norris Dam Park.
The View From Above Norris Dam:

( More Views Behind THIS )
Moonshine takes a well-deserved breather:

From Norris Dam, the Trail passes the Museum of Appalacia when it connects with State Road 61. I decided to refuel here (because of the proximity of I-75 and its various facilities) and take the "spur" to Clinton, where I made an official "break" in the lap. Distance: 112.5 Miles. Total Distance So Far: 147.5 miles.
The Comics store in Clinton:

It needs a "tidy" desperately but has a multi-million-dollar inventory!
Haven't decided when Stage Ⅲ will happen. This week, and possibly next, may be too busy for another maraud. Watch This Space.

Decided to play it close to "home" for the first stage...
Started the trip odometer at Piedmont Elementary school, where Dumplin Valley Road and 25W/70 come together. That's my official "Start/Finish" line of the route. From there we scoot east on 25W/70 into Dandridge, then take the south turn through Downtown Dandridge on Route 92/Gay Street past the Old Court House (see the Pants, Gray entry and the Court House Museum Weapons entry) across the Hoskins & Jarnigan Bridge and up/down/every which way towards Chestnut Hill.
Chestnut Hill is home to an enormous packing plant for the Bush company. They now have a Visitor Center with a Museum, an eatery (who wants to bet there are baked beans on the menu?) a small theater and other goodies. But I just stopped to get this picture:

From Chestnut Hill the route goes East on US 411 towards Newport. It reconnects with 25W/70 at the Newport City Limit and continues to meet 25E after passing the Cocke County Fairgrounds. Unfortunately, there isn't very much that's particularly picturesque on this side of Newport...for that a visitor is better off looking at Downtown a few miles further East.
We take the left turn at Newport and take 25E North to re-cross the French Broad River and re-enter Jefferson County at Baneberry, and then track further North to White Pine:

(See also the Pants, Black entry.) This is were we end Stage Ⅰ. Distance: 35.0 Miles. Stage Ⅱ will be (if all goes well) Saturday.

Hello! Mr. Chips
Jun. 9th, 2010 03:15 pmOr "Tech Envy I Can Use".
Got a Father's Day circular from Radio Shack and saw the specs on a memory chip to fit my camera, for $25. SIXTEEN TIMES the memory I'm using now. Room for over 2700 pictures, or TWO HOURS of cheap-@$$ low-rez silent video.
I can dig it. Wonder if I can swing it someday.
* * *
Dad is over at our elderly lady neighbor's place, chatting and doing odd jobs for her and so on. When he finishes, he'll bring her beloved Chrysler Cordoba here overnight so he can take it to her mechanic tomorrow morning. Again, Dad jokes to me every so often that he'll lobby for her to leave the car to me in her will.
* * *
Mum is re-reading Black Tie Affair as prep for re-typing it for a re-issue. She got the rights back from Kensington and not only is it a slam-dunk for an e-book version, but a friend of hers who produces audio books wants it.
* * *
Inner Child got a huge helium balloon from the used-car branch of Ted Russell in Knoxville just as they were closing overnight. Dunno how big it really is as I had to deflate it down to 27" so it could fit through Moonshine's back door.
It's raining and Moonshine really needs a wash. Sometime this week, I promise.

Feeding The Updata
May. 19th, 2010 01:58 pm*) All-Seeing Eye just heard back from the camera repair shop in Asheville. Olympus has been repaired, with a new part, and will be shipped back. Dad is paying the bill. Need to do something nice for him for Father's Day...so I'm open to suggestions.
*) The above is also good for my Reviewer Corps project because now I don't have to borrow somebody else's camera to photograph my work.
*) Sweet Tooth adores the Russell Stover Chocolate Sauce. It on bread is too decadent for breakfast...you might get away with it on a coffee break, but only if you've done something important that morning first.
*) I just inflated a 16" royal blue balloon for Inner Child.

Stupf Of The Day
May. 10th, 2010 09:30 pm1) Sent my digital camera to a shop recommended by one of the Asheville gang.
2) Helped a family friend get sound out of her computer and understand Facebook.
3) Dad put the fungus-eaten and rotten picnic table out of its misery today. Smashed it apart with hammers and then threw the pieces into a bonfire.
4) Russell Stover chocolate sauce on Texas Toast nyam gran. :)

Apr. 19th, 2010 04:00 pmFollowing-Up On THIS POST:
*) Reviewer Corps article is done and may be available on the IPMS/USA website soon.
*) Sweet Tooth just had a granola bar.
*) The hole burning a hole in my wallet just got filled in with a payment from the IRS. May go shopping tomorrow.
*) All-Seeing Eye is pained because Olympus Imaging America in New York State REFUSES to repair the broken digital camera 'cause it's five years old. "We'll hold it till July and sell you a sorta-new replacement camera for 'we promise' a fair price." Otherwise, All-Seeing Eye is screwed.
*) Inner Child sees that the air is too dirty to pway with bawoons. Blame the volcano.
