FreeWill Takes A Walk
Jul. 28th, 2015 11:33 pmMuch of the action in the world's novels takes place inside buildings, according to author Robert Bringhurst. But characters in older Russian literature are an exception, he says. They are always out in the forests, traveling and rambling. In accordance with astrological omens, I suggest that you draw inspiration from the Russians' example in the coming days. As often and as long as you can, put yourself in locations where the sky is overhead. Nature is the preferred setting, but even urban spots are good. Your luck, wisdom, and courage are likely to increase in direct proportion to how much time you spend outdoors.
If it weren't this place's rainy season...
Randomnity
Jun. 10th, 2014 02:21 pm* The Public Radio station is playing the Lord of the Rings Symphony as I'm writing this.
* Dad just installed the window air conditioner unit, and it works.
* I frosted the cupcakes for Dad's Bible study group tomorrow.
* When I looked up my own name on a search through my data base for a graphic I've already shared here, I found a reference in a Battletech e-book. I'm a Steiner. I don't know how I feel about that.
* We await word from our mechanic on the status of Dad's pickup truck. A stud in one of the wheel mounts failed, and the other studs for that wheel mount were in bad shape, so he's replacing the lot.
* I'm dabbling with Bitstrips on Facebook...but it doesn't seem to be habit-forming, yet.
Too Much And Not Enough
Jul. 18th, 2012 01:39 amI fully intended to post more often here...but my own connectivity has been horrible due to the weather. Either rain or heat. That and I haven't felt much like writing a lot of stuff.
Besides, what is there that I can write that you are willing to read? Riddle me that.
Ascending Order
May. 20th, 2012 04:18 pmEarlier this afternoon my internet connectivity refused to work properly so I decided to go to the area flea markets just to browse around. I pulled into the parking lot of one and in the slot next to Moonshine's there was a station wagon--and a helium balloon rested on its interior ceiling. Sure enough, I noticed a kid on his father's shoulder on his way back to the vehicle after their shopping.
Turns out today is Ascension Sunday, which commemorates the return of Jesus to Heaven following his Resurrection. Both it and Pentecost (next Sunday) are often excuses for church congregations to celebrate by releasing balloons and giving balloons to the children; since it usually coincides with the end of the secular school year it's often the end of the Sunday School year for the kids too.
I guess we're getting into a time of year I used to look forward to as a child, the transition from Spring to Summer. As an adult, that has lost a lot of meaning for me. Maybe that's the point of this "random encounter". For me, times need new meanings.

Jul. 20th, 2011 12:01 amDo you stare for hours every day into little screens like those on smart phones, computer monitors, and TVs? If so, I recommend that you tear your gaze away from them more than usual in the coming week. A change in your brain chemistry needs to happen, and one good way to accomplish it will be to feast your eyes on vast panoramas and expansive natural scenes. Doing so will invigorate your thinking about the design and contours of your own destiny, and that would be in sweet alignment with the astrological omens. So catch regular views of the big picture, Sagittarius. Treat clouds and birds and stars as if they were restorative messages from the wide-open future. Gaze lovingly at the big sky.
As Max Headroom said it, "I need a change of screen-ery."

Writer's Block: The long and short of it
Jun. 7th, 2011 03:52 pmWhen I was in middle and high school during summer I used to attempt to read the Colliers and Funk & Wagnalls Encyclopedia sets, all the volumes, cover to cover. It was a habit thing. Granted, my memory isn't as great as I thought it was, or I probably would have retained a lot more information from them.
Short books? Do comics count? I have hundreds of those.
No More Next Years
Apr. 19th, 2011 04:40 pm

When Mum and I were out today we noticed workmen were taking down and pulling out the fencing at this ballfield, which is only a block and a half from Rather Manor. So I came back with my camera.
The place was privately-owned, and eventually made superfluous when a larger public facility opened closer to Dandridge proper some years ago. This year the school district annexed the land; soon the place will be re-leveled for an expansion of the High School.
Is It August Yet?
Aug. 1st, 2010 12:21 amNaked Eyes, "Promises, Promises". From my sister's Frosh Year in college (Warren Wilson). A time of great anxiety, changes, transitions, and possibilities. We saw the coming of the month of August with a mix of excitement and dread. So much could go right. So much could go wrong. We never knew what.
I guess I'll ALWAYS see the start of August every year henceforth to my dying day the same way.
Time For A Vend
Jul. 9th, 2010 06:44 pmIn honor of Mum and the battle looming on her horizon. I love you...and you can count on me.
This has been a very depressing summer and I hope when it's gone it's gone for good.
The main story in Knoxville these days involves the murder trials of four alleged career criminals, and the TV stations in particular have been all over it. The first defendant was convicted last week and sentenced this past week. He's getting life without parole, but public (and media) sentiment was strong for the death penalty. The next defendant is already in the queue for his trial, probably this coming week. I think they'll have the dickens of a time trying to find impartial juries for the third and fourth defendants. And I wish there was a way of avoiding this media coverage. But there isn't, and I hate it.
