One thing to be grateful for today...when Ted Kennedy's funeral was going on in Washington, the TV networks had the restraint not to pre-empt the scheduled programming all day, like they did for other public figures' funerals in the past. I still haven't forgiven THEM for Hubert Humphrey's funeral coverage in 1978. Who knows?--perhaps even the bloodthirsty jackals of the networks are getting funeral fatigue.

This has been a very depressing summer and I hope when it's gone it's gone for good.

The main story in Knoxville these days involves the murder trials of four alleged career criminals, and the TV stations in particular have been all over it. The first defendant was convicted last week and sentenced this past week. He's getting life without parole, but public (and media) sentiment was strong for the death penalty. The next defendant is already in the queue for his trial, probably this coming week. I think they'll have the dickens of a time trying to find impartial juries for the third and fourth defendants. And I wish there was a way of avoiding this media coverage. But there isn't, and I hate it.
