Jun. 10th, 2014 02:21 pm* The Public Radio station is playing the Lord of the Rings Symphony as I'm writing this.
* Dad just installed the window air conditioner unit, and it works.
* I frosted the cupcakes for Dad's Bible study group tomorrow.
* When I looked up my own name on a search through my data base for a graphic I've already shared here, I found a reference in a Battletech e-book. I'm a Steiner. I don't know how I feel about that.
* We await word from our mechanic on the status of Dad's pickup truck. A stud in one of the wheel mounts failed, and the other studs for that wheel mount were in bad shape, so he's replacing the lot.
* I'm dabbling with Bitstrips on Facebook...but it doesn't seem to be habit-forming, yet.
FreeWill Is On A Sugar High
Oct. 1st, 2013 03:07 pmSagittarius Horoscope for week of October 3, 2013
To give you the oracle that best matches your current astrological omens, I've borrowed from "Sweetness," a poem by Stephen Dunn. I urge you to memorize it or write it on a piece of paper that you will carry around with you everywhere you go. Say Dunn's words as if they were your own: "Often a sweetness comes / as if on loan, stays just long enough // to make sense of what it means to be alive, / then returns to its dark / source. As for me, I don’t care // where it’s been, or what bitter road / it’s traveled / to come so far, to taste so good."
Dad bought us a bag of Cinnamon Mini-Donuts this morning. I'm wondering if I should have a couple with my next cup of tea.
I seem to be practicing good temperance everywhere else today.

They Don't Make 'Em Like They Used To
Apr. 3rd, 2011 09:45 pmIt got broken tonight.
It was like part of the family. It was iconic.
We had it thirty years...bought it soon after the shopping center at US 19 and Spring Hill Blvd. opened.
It was beginning to show its age, so its breaking should not have surprised me--but it did.
It was a Rubbermaid one-pint measuring beaker, slabsided, with scales on both sides, translucent smoky brown, no handle, spout on one side. Bought it at Publix.
Made countless dishes while utilizing it to confirm quantities of ingredients. Its "killer app" was the milk for Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, which it excelled at. We must have prepared well over 1000 batches of Macaroni & Cheese using that beaker.
And now it's gone and we'll have to find another somewhere. Life from here on will not be the same.

Highlights Of My Day
Feb. 19th, 2011 08:29 pm*) Did the Gamers' Bizarre Bazaar at HobbyTown. Sold a few things; bought nothing, made enough cash to go from "nowhere near enough money" to "not quite enough money".
*) Got a couple stickers that I will need to scan and post a separate entry about.
*) Missed my aunt and uncle when they visited Rather Manor for lunch. Did NOT miss Lynn's cake, however. In fact, I'm doing everything in my power to avoid the siren song of another piece. Granted, I will need a midnight snack in a couple hours.
*) Saw the ESPN show on ABC today about the life of NASCAR would-be superstar Tim Richmond. The ultimate spoiled rich boy/enfant terrible/non-Good Ol' Boy whose career and life were cut short by AIDS-related health problems.

*) Got to re-friend former Livejournal user Jolly Roger Blackburn on Facebook. I know I should have done it long ago, but there was no need as I participate very often on the official Kenzerco boards.

All Good Things Must Come To An End...
Jun. 29th, 2010 10:42 pm
Finishing it up. The dregs went on some Graham crackers earlier tonight...and to empty/clean the jar:
A kettle of boiling water;
A latte mug with instant coffee and creamer powder added.
Add the boiling water to the empty jar, stir for a minute with a long iced tea spoon, then pour from the jar into the mug.
Mix well and drink. Not as good as the Lindt Pan-Galactic Cocoa Blaster, but pretty darned decadent.
FreeWill, Yet Again
Jun. 16th, 2010 02:27 amSagittarius Horoscope for week of June 17, 2010
I wouldn't say that things are about to get darker for you. But they're definitely going to get deeper and damper and more complicated. I don't expect there to be any confrontations with evil or encounters with nasty messes, but you may slip down a rabbit hole into a twilight region where all the creatures speak in riddles and nothing is as it seems. And yet that's the best possible place for you to gain new insight about the big questions that so desperately need more clarity. If you can manage to hold your own in the midst of the dream-like adventures, you'll be blessed with a key to relieving one of your long-running frustrations.
Is it just me or do you smell cake too?

Hitting The (Chocolate) Sauce
May. 5th, 2010 10:41 pmYes, in the name of SCIENCE.
Tried heating some Russell Stover Chocolate sauce in the microwave. It made a mess. Put some of the not-mess portion in sundae dishes on top of no-sugar-added ice cream (which is hard to scoop out for some reason). When the sauce cooled back down it was to the hardness/chewiness of a Tootsie Roll. (This stuff is a lot thicker than the syrup sold in squeeze bottles in the supermarket.)
Tasty, but not habit forming. May try to tweak the heating process to limit the messiness factor in future experiments.

Kitchen Sink-o De Mayo
May. 5th, 2010 01:12 pmNew water heater is installed; it has water but not enough juice. Electrician buddy is checking the breakers and lines to the kitchen. This day may get more expensive than we realize.
Meanwhile, this just in: Russell Stover Chocolate Sauce.

Science will commence with dessert.
PS: Electrician was successful, but noticed that our wiring was 1) not 100% up to code 2) chewed up in places by "varmints". A major league upgrade will be in Rather Manor's future.

Notes From My Birthday Today
Dec. 15th, 2009 09:16 pm*) I treated Moonshine to an oil change and lube, but the place where I got that no longer has a car wash. Just as well because snow is forecast for the weekend. Want to get Moonshine a new set of tires before my long-delayed trip to Florida in February or March.
*) The Jimmie Johnson cap I got is nice. The 21 shotgun shell salute, that wasn't so nice. And I could have lived the rest of my life without the surprise package inside the water heater.
*) I made pizza for dinner. No cake or dessert but I'm holding off on that till I see my brother and/or my other buddies.

Hey.
A couple notes since I last talked about bread here:
1) Sister bought us a new toaster to replace an old one. It can handle Texas Toast. Now all I have to do is nudge the folks into buying the bread more often.
2) We're baking a batch of Monkey Bread, so I thought to look up an old USENET post on the subject and repost it here.
(...) Buddy, it is. In fact, your mention of it is making me a little Jonesy for it right now. Gonna search the archives of Ye Olde 75Mhz Pentium I computer...
Well, I got the Chef of the Monkey Bread right here, so I'm going to reconstruct the recipie here and now. Here goes: ( Monkey Bread )

Jun. 10th, 2009 12:19 amSagittarius Horoscope for week of June 11, 2009
Of the 190 short films the Three Stooges made for Columbia Pictures, only five actually had pie fights. However, those classic scenes sum up all there is to know about the mythic meaning of pie fights, as well as the needs they address and the techniques involved. I urge you to study up on the Stooges' teachings concerning these matters -- and put them to immediate use. Nothing could be more effective in dealing with stalled negotiations, convoluted mind games, superficial exchanges, excessive gravity, and bureaucratic slowdowns than a righteous pie fight.
I actually equate pie combat with the end of the Sixties/start of the Seventies all-primate TV spy spoof Lance Link.
My sister is 1) a pastry chef 2) a proud (at least former, if not present) owner of an Aladdin Lance Link lunchbox. If ever I need a pie fight, I can call in a pro. So there.
