I've had laryngitis for the last some days, and I wonder how long I will need to endure the condition.

I've even thought very seriously about the possibility of permanent speech loss and what that might do to what's left of my working life.

It's not like anybody's ever complimented me about my voice, or invited me to speak just to hear me talk.  No, more often than not I'll be interrupted or cut off before I complete my trains of thought.

Sagittarius Horoscope for week of January 9, 2014

"If men had wings and bore black feathers, few of them would be clever enough to be crows," said 19th-century social reformer Henry Ward Beecher. That might be an accurate assessment for most people, but I don't think it will be true for you Sagittarians in the foreseeable future. Your animal intelligence will be working even better than usual. Your instinctual inclinations are likely to serve as reliable guides to wise action. Trust what your body tells you! You will definitely be clever enough to be a crow.

This is one bird who wishes he'd gone South from this Winter, which has been far more Turkey than Eagle.

Horoscope for week of February 28, 2013

Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)
"Don't think the garden loses its ecstasy in winter," wrote the Persian mystic poet Rumi. "It's quiet, but the roots are down there riotous." I think you're like that winter garden right now, Sagittarius. Outwardly, there's not much heat and flash. Bright ideas and strong opinions are not pouring out of you at their usual rates. You're not even prone to talking too loud or accidentally knocking things over. This may in fact be as close as you can get to being a wallflower. And yet deep beneath the surface, out of sight from casual observers, you are charging up your psychic battery. The action down there is vibrant and vigorous.

There were times I thought there was a lot of white noise in my bedroom. Now I think it's the sound of the sap running in the trees outside my window. This is the time of year for that to happen. Are you due for a Sugar Snow?

Dry, clear skies, calmed winds...and at the freezing point.

No, thank goodness! It's been strangely warm and clear and pleasant in these parts so far. Of course, when Winter actually comes down on us I'm sure it will be different.

Stupidity can get VERY expensive. Don't let this happen to you.

"...they scrubbed that 'volunteer' mission you heard about."--punchline from one of Bob Stevens' There I Was comics.

We have about a quarter inch or so of icy slush on the pavement, so driving to Knoxville to exchange some computer components to get Precious running isn't going to happen today.

*Watches Moonshine rest under her cozy carport*

I'm sure we can all abide by that.

Winter has never excited me. Too much stress, strain, pain, sickness, deprivation and outright COLD than I like to have to handle. The holidays are so artificial and cliche that I wonder how anybody feels anything special about them after they reach a certain age.

Today the class projects involved the differing methods of inspecting components. As a result, my fingers have been coated with "penetrant" dye and it will probably take a few days to wear it off. I look even more frightful than usual. :(

At least I'm not as frightful as the weather is looking now. Cold and windy and not-sticky-yet pellet snow.

Attempted to shop for tools, now that I have my Grant surplus and a little cash in hand. So I went to Kodak, Sevierville and Pigeon Forge. Observations:

* Route 66 between I-40 and US 411/441 is all chewed up with construction and with the extra traffic it's a nightmare.

* Black & Decker and Workshop Tools have, between them, taken over the lion's share of the "small box" hardware retail business in Sevier County. I didn't like the selections for the tools I needed, so I didn't buy anything. My plan now is to buy the more immediate stupf at a Lowe's on Sunday afternoon and hope that I'll have funds left over from that to get the big nasty stupf later.

* Muzak with pop Christmas music. Decorations all over. And of course, no cheer. Why does this "season" start so darned early and not break for anything till after New Year's? I'm tired of it already!

...I think it's kinda sad that Dad would sooner watch a Bruce Willis gangster flick than the Winter Olympics action.

The Pebble Beach Pro-Am Golf is also this weekend and it's weird to see actors from shows I follow there (Thomas Gibson from Criminal Minds, Rob Morrow from Numb3rs). In terms of fame, how big is big?--how big is too big?--how big is just big enough?

And of course, you can't have Pebble Beach without Bill Murray. Nuff Said.

Over on Facebook I posted a link to the Jimmy Buffett song "Boat Drinks". Decided not to re-post it here for various reasons.

I'm stuck here in a house where 2/3rds of the water pipes are frozen and there's not much to do worth doing. We have the football game on, but it's two teams we care very little about and chances are whoever wins will be beaten by the next team they face.

CHUCK returns for the premiere of its third season tonight. I hope I can stay functional up to then.

But how surreal is it that the local public radio station plays Ralph Van Williams' suite from the film Scott of the Antarctic the same day as one of the nastiest wind storms we've ever experienced in these parts?
