A couple weeks ago, on my way to the scale model club meeting in Knoxville, I stopped at a BP station for a fill-up and noticed that there was a crew at work painting the pump barriers and the streetlight posts.  They were cutting down the plastic temporary signs these places always have ("Play The Lottery Here" or "Special On Pepsi") and throwing them in the dumpster in the back corner of the property.

I'd seriously thought to go retrieve the signage, as the plastic material is good for scratchbuilding scale models.  But I had a meeting to go to, and the night was cold, and even on my way back to the house I mulled it over more and came to the same conclusions.  It would probably be easier for me just to look up a signmaker and either ask for surplus pieces or buy the raw material through that channel.

I went past the place today.  It's no longer a BP.  I couldn't take their plastic then; now they can't take MY plastic.

Plastic isn't the future anymore.  It's the now.

Yes, I turned 45 a couple days ago, and couldn't talk about it much here because of the fact that it was also the end of the fiscal month and I was out of bandwidth till the next day.

The cake was not a lie. Thanks Jessica!

My other main gift is a black hoodie. I tried to take a picture of myself in it, but was frustrated by the digital camera's failure to focus properly. It makes no difference as I plan to get some iron-on transfers and alter its aesthetics, and due photography will happen thence.

Bought myself some older model kits, which had been part of a stash that belonged to a modeler who is no longer with us. He bequeathed his holdings to our Knoxville IPMS chapter, and buddy Paul is selling them off with the proceeds split between the club and the man's heirs.

Bought it at HobbyTown in Knoxville at the IPMS meet Tuesday; got the usual club discount on it. With my Internet service interrupted badly by storms yesterday, I put it together and painted it tootsweet. Photos after more paint and decals.

Did the Knoxville IPMS meeting tonight and the Judging exercize and my main lession: I have no hope in Creation of winning a prize in competition with my own work so long as Mike Driskill is around.

Maybe I'll feel like Judging the show this year. I took some years off because of that one disastrous show we had.

Played phone tag with Mike Birchfield. Be glad he still doesn't know his way around a computer yet.

I'm not particularly pleased...but had to do these for the exercize.

To clarify: it's the pix, I'm not so happy with, not necessarily the models themselves.

Tell you the truth, there was a bit of "why should I care" in my mind when it came to NASA's Project Constellation and the Orion/ARES tests.

That went away when a buddy at the Knoxville IPMS meet Tuesday night showed me a model kit of the Constellation Orion/Artemis unit. Orion and Artemis are substantially bigger than the corresponding Command/Service and Lunar Excursion Modules from Project Apollo. Orion is designed to carry EIGHT Astronauts instead of three. So I am impressed with the ambition involved.

Just arrived at Rather Manor. I'm getting acquainted.

Did the aptitude tests at the Tech Center today. They were not particularly horrible.

Just finished late lunch/early dinner and will leave soon for the IPMS meet in Knoxville.

Possible recap later tonight.

Hey.

I got in on Early Voting and cast my ballot for the General Election. From here on my LJ will be a Politics-Free Zone.

Meanwhile, at the IPMS/USA local meeting last night I met Paul Francis of Lucas Francis...and after voting I went to his studio which is only a couple miles from my house.

I'll probably be there a lot from now on. I now have a reason to get up mornings.

FP (who may be clearing his model-making gear out of the guest room)

PS: So this guy is responsible for what happened HERE? I wonder if I was running into him left and right before last night. I guess you know how it is...you regard strangers much much differently than you regard known neighbors and friends.

Hey.

The hobby store in Knoxville where my IPMS/USA local meets had an in-store model contest today and I entered, only because Larry (one of our club's former presidents and an assistant manager at the store) asked us to, to fill out the field and raise the bar. We do have some incredibly talented chaps in our ranks.

I won.

I swept the field of small-scale aircraft made by adults.

With ONE entry.

Which I didn't even have much hope for.

So I got a blue ribbon and a coupon worth $5 off my next purchase at the store, provided I buy before the second week of November.

I owe Larry some money and the club a demand for explanations. There are at least two other regulars in the club who could have kicked my afterburner if they ONLY SHOWED UP!
