Did the Knoxville IPMS meeting tonight and the Judging exercize and my main lession: I have no hope in Creation of winning a prize in competition with my own work so long as Mike Driskill is around.
Maybe I'll feel like Judging the show this year. I took some years off because of that one disastrous show we had.
Played phone tag with Mike Birchfield. Be glad he still doesn't know his way around a computer yet.

Too Much Is Happening--And Not Enough
May. 1st, 2010 08:21 pmOnce again, HobbyTown USA in Knoxville hosted the Bizarre Bazaar for the gamers, and once again I took a load of game stuff there to sell--and wound up buying some stuff and selling nothing.
Once again, it was Free Comics Day and I missed going to a comics store. I doubt there were any comics I would have wanted this time, tho'.
Once again, the hot rods gathered at Tennessee Valley Fairgrounds and there was no point in my going to it. (I could afford admission--but had no camera that worked!)
Once again, I went to a donut shop and walked away without buying anything, due to my straight-jacket of willpower.
Once again, Sempai Mike called me to ask about stuff I already told him about or didn't know answers to.
Once again, storm clouds threaten us from the West.
Once again, Moonshine out-hustled more powerful cars at traffic lights, including two Mustang GTs in quick succession.
Once again, I miss good friends and good times.

Random Thoughts In The Wake Of The Trip
Mar. 20th, 2010 12:05 pmI really could have stayed another week in Florida, but I got enough of the things on my list done and all the people who matter most to me. Darn it, if America had actual passenger trains running I'd shuttle between here and there all the time.
* "And I'm Never Going Back To My Old School..." As said earlier, on St. Patrick's Day a high school classmate had invited me and my brother to a party at an Irish/Sports bar. Going was a necessary mistake. The music was way too loud to carry on conversations. We found our "party" but beyond two or three people we didn't "mingle" and while I thought I recognized one woman--I didn't want to talk to her. The truth came to me that if I really wanted to socialize with my classmates in school, I would have. These days there is no meaning attaching me to this crowd. All of a sudden I feel okay with having been shunned and flunked. I just didn't fit in.
* Too many of the people I know are now attached to oxygen apparati. If you smoke, quit. If you don't smoke, don't start.
* I will never again go in a Disney store. Mike dragged me in one so he could look at Princess figures. They'd never hire me, but I bet working there would drive a lot of people insane.
* I will probably swear off eating more than one meal a day at a restaurant. Not so much the expense, or necessarily the food...just the stress is enough.
* Q-105 is back. The Tampa station is now Sixties/Seventies/Eighties oldies rather than baseline Top 40, but they haven't lost the style that made us fans for so long.
* I decided to not be the Lipinski Proxy this time. Dana's fantasy baseball league is down to five participants so their draft today will probably run a lot quicker even without my assistance.
* Atlanta's highways are bedlam. Both ways we had trouble with crowds and volume slowdowns. Dunno what route I'll take next time tho'.

Rainy, Then Heavy Cloud
Jan. 28th, 2009 04:54 pmWhat to talk about...
* Sent a letter and some goodies to Sempai Mike.
* Saw my DVD of Ramrod To Emden the other day. It's an okay documentary, but not up to the level of Thunderbolt or the original Memphis Belle.
* Spent a good part of yesterday cutting the clicky bases off my collection of Mechwarrior: Dark Age miniatures, so I could repaint/touch up some of them for other games. I may also go through my small-scale mecha collection and IRAN (Inspect, Rebuild As Necessary) them for gaming.
* My Dad got the VHS collection of a deceased neighbor and it's sitting in our dining room. What can you say about the mind of a man who had both Gospel Music and Blue Velvet? Dad's already taken the initiative to give the Elvis movies to another neighbor. Our own VHS player doesn't work and needs new internal rubber parts.
* Frozen pizza (a gift from my Kentucky buddy Stanley) in the oven. Dinner in ten minutes.

Status report of sorts:
* Water pipes are back to normal and the shower drain has finally thawed out. Bathroom pipes are about 50% new now. Dad did all the work.
* After two shopping trips on behalf of sempai Mike, I'm too pooped to travel at the moment. Maybe a trip to Sevierville and Maryville tomorrow. Kentucky trip pencilled for Monday but that depends on my buddy there being available.
* Finished my side of writing the first issue of a miniseries submission to Antarctic. More about that later, tho' I'm sure if you surf my Archives you'll find out plenty on it anyway.
* Vic.com was wonky a part of the day. Connects went sour every so often. We got our monthly bill today. Coincidence?

Loose Stuff
Apr. 28th, 2008 02:47 am* I wanted to do another "Music For Your Monday" but there isn't an official video for the song I wanted to post. Maybe when I obtain Video-Fu (and the audio) I'll create one myself.
* Roeper and his current cohort at At The Movies gave Iron Man Two Thumbs Up. Hmm. And they'll review Speed Racer next week.
* I saw a Nova program about the future of automobiles last night and I'll say one thing about that: I want my next car (or to convert the car I have) to have a carbon fiber body. Much better than metal or fiberglass. Heck, a carbon fiber PLANE would be all manner of awesome to me.
* The Penguins are 2-0 in their series with the Rangers! Whoo-Hoo!
* Saw quite a bit of the NASCAR race at Talladega on TV and I'm impressed with how much more stable the Car of Tommorow is on that super-speedway track. Incidents that would have caused accidents in past years could be managed better by the drivers...and accidents that would have taken out half the field now only have a more limited effect.
* Sempai Mike Birchfield called. Again, he tells me he's going to buy a computer soon...and I fear for the sanity of the entire Internet if/when he does. And he tells me the only reason he's wanting to buy one is that the Tampa Tribune's handling of the comics page sucks.

Just Got a Call From Sempai Mike
Dec. 20th, 2007 11:21 pmImportant points:
1) He did NOT send me the hoodie.
2) For
theidolhands--Mike's now a fan of the show Pushing Daisies. So the two of you have something to get writing each other about.

PS: Producers Are Money-Grubbing Scum.

Why I Asked, And Another Topic
Mar. 9th, 2007 12:01 amI got a call from Sempai Mike the other day, and he told me the one thing all his otaku friends had in common was that they all like elves.
I'm kind of indifferent to elves myself. Can't tell you why that is. My favorite Middle-Earth characters are either humans or hobbits.
* * *
A friend loaned me his home-brewed DVDs of Superdimensional Century Orguss so I could test them out on my DVD player.
I had forgotten how foul-mouthed Kei was in the US Renditions dub. I know most of the audience for anime back circa 1990 was teenagers but c'mon--why put in strong R-rated wording in a dub like this?
FP
PS:
Traditionally, online tests would ask certain questions about your musical tastes or clothing for a stereotype, your experiences for a purity test, or deep questions for a personality test. We're turning that upside down - all the questions affect all the results, and we've got some innovative results too! Enjoy :-)

This test was a PAIN. It kept resetting on me and I had to hit the BACK button often to get it to work.

The Everything Test
There are many different types of tests on the internet today. Personality tests, purity tests, stereotype tests, political tests. But now, there is one test to rule them all.Traditionally, online tests would ask certain questions about your musical tastes or clothing for a stereotype, your experiences for a purity test, or deep questions for a personality test. We're turning that upside down - all the questions affect all the results, and we've got some innovative results too! Politics Your political views would best be described as Liberal, whom you agree with around 73% of the time. | Socioeconomic Your attitude toward life best associates you with Lower Middle Class. You make more than 0% of those who have taken this test, and 95% less than the U.S. average. |
If your life was a movie, it would be rated G. By the way, your hottness rank is 36%, hotter than 51% of other test takers. |

So Much For Hunting Faeries
Dec. 21st, 2006 09:27 pmVisited both the Oriental Grocers and a hobby store I know today...realized early on that I was grasping at straws. No Dominion collectable miniatures.
It would have been okay if I knew Sempai liked Lilo & Stitch. The hobby store had plenty of those.
Usually I don't mind shopping, but this Xmas season has been awful.
In our family, Christmas ends when we say it ends, so I'm not worried. My sister (and perhaps my brother too) will visit us on Sunday. The gifts aren't so important to us anymore. We don't get co-dependent or anything.
More to come.

What My Sempai Wants For Xmas
Dec. 18th, 2006 09:52 pmThis is a figurine in the Dominion trading-figures set. The character is Greenpeace a.k.a. Crolis. Sempai told me he wanted her when he called about an hour ago. Dunno if I can find the figures here in Tennessee. The store where I got this image from is happy to sell me one for $3...and charge me $10 for shipping. Thank you no.
I'm not worried about Sempai seeing this blog, as he don't have a computer and dunno nuthin' 'bout this freaky Internet stuff.
Any help in acquiring or just pointing me to a "local" source would be greatly appreciated. I know a couple Asian grocers in Knoxdad I can visit, but beyond that...?
