I accidentally took Precious out of commission while trying to clean out the dust bunnies overnight, so it was in the shop today. The damage: a CPU chip (a second-hand replacement) and a fan for it. $100, mostly for labor.

Now I'm trying to get caught back up to things. I probably won't do too much of this though...it's supposed to be vacation time!

Your result for The Fan Fiction Personality Test...

The True Fan

OOC is blasphemy, canon is everything.

Once you fall in love with a movie, book or TV series, you are loyal like an old dog. You take fanfiction quite serious and use it as a substitute after the canon ran out.

You are probably a walking dictionary of your favourite fandom and you are picky about what you write and read. The closer to the "real thing" fanfiction is, the more you like it.

You rather explore a character in all depth, see new sides and learn more about them than creating new characters or mix up the situations they are in.

22. QUANTUM LEAP
21. FUTURAMA
20. STAR WARS: CLONE WARS
19. STARSHIP TROOPERS
18. HEROES
17. ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND
16. TOTAL RECALL
15. FIREFLY/SERENITY
14. CHILDREN OF MEN
13. THE TERMINATOR/ TERMINATOR 2
12. BACK TO THE FUTURE

5. STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN
4. THE X-FILES
3. BLADE RUNNER
2. BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (the remake)
1. THE MATRIX

And from this my comments:
* V -- I felt it was overhyped, got into soap opera territory quickly (in a bad way) and got too cute with referencing other sci-fi shows.
* Quantum Leap -- Liked the pilot but the rest of the series lost me rather quickly.
* Clone Wars -- Haven't seen much of it but would rather put forth Disney's Gargoyles as an alternative. Way underrated as a sci-fi/fantasy/myth fusion concept.
* Starship Troopers -- When I finally got to see some of it, I wasn't much impressed. I mean, I sat through Space: Above & Beyond hoping for it to get better, and all I got from STroopers was deja vu about that.
* Firefly -- I used to joke that I didn't know it from Mantis. Now I really don't know it from Andromeda and Farscape.
* The Matrix -- I'm a big fan of William Gibson, dig. I'd like to have all his books, but I'm rather behind on that due to my anime and model kit habits. I have NOT seen any of the Matrix movies, tho'...because I'm afraid of how much they may have stolen from Gibson. And another thing while I'm on the subject: "Johnny Mnemonic" the short story and the movie of the same title have precious little relation to one another...but I also have to say that one version's strengths and the other version's weaknesses are cross reflected and balance each other out.
* Brazil and Blade Runner -- I want the special editions of both of these and somehow I will get them.

Mr. Pearl, who had been a standout supporter of the anime fandom community for many years, died this past weekend after a long and painful struggle with diabetes.

This needs to be a wake-up call to anime fandom. We need to take better care of ourselves healthwise. Me? I'm the token skinny guy in a circle of friends who I see are getting fatter and fatter from overindulgence on fast food and junky snacks and too little exercize. I only eat fast food when I travel, and have to exercize every day whether I like it or not. (Comes from perpetually having a staircase between where I am and what I want!) And even then, I don't consider myself all that healthy.

The changes can be small and gradual, of course. I'm not advocating taking away anybody's Pocky. Just...park a little further away and walk once in a while. Make your own sandwiches and pack a cooler of them on road trips instead of eating at Micky D's. Drink tea or coffee instead of sodapop.

Those who persist on being couch potatoes sometimes wind up being planted.

So far so good. Back running after replacing the motherboard fan and adding a expansion-slot-mounted fan as well. (Knock on Formica.) The fellas at Computer King suggested that if I upgrade I should get a power supply with an integral fan too. I just might do that.

After suffering yet more Stop Errors with my compy today, I decided to take the original motherboard fan and heat sink off and get them replaced.

Went to the Sevierville Staples. They didn't have any motherboard fans. They stopped carrying motherboard fans in the time since I bought my current CPU fan from them.

So on the morrow (or a few hours thereafter), I will take compy to Knoxdad and have the guys who put it together put a new fan in it, and perhaps make elsejustments.

I'm posting this message from my mother's compy, by the way, if you hadn't already surmised the fact.

I'm still getting Stop Errors and lock-ups and browser crashes. Bah. If I'm down for a while, it's because of that.
frustratedpilot: (Default)
It looks like that problem I was having earlier was due to the computer possibly overheating. I looked inside the CPU case and found that the case's fan was only set on LOW. So I put it on HIGH and I'm seeing how it does.

I still want to replace the fan on the motherboard itself. It makes just enough noise to discourage me from writing very long documents.

PS: I forgot to cruciform my phalanges and apply knuckle to dead cellulose matter in noisemaker fashion. About an hour after making this post, I had another Stop Error. I suppose I need to take this compy in for a service.

I got a call from Sempai Mike the other day, and he told me the one thing all his otaku friends had in common was that they all like elves.

I'm kind of indifferent to elves myself. Can't tell you why that is. My favorite Middle-Earth characters are either humans or hobbits.

* * *

A friend loaned me his home-brewed DVDs of Superdimensional Century Orguss so I could test them out on my DVD player.

I had forgotten how foul-mouthed Kei was in the US Renditions dub. I know most of the audience for anime back circa 1990 was teenagers but c'mon--why put in strong R-rated wording in a dub like this?

1. Numb3rs - I hang out on the official forum.

2. Shortpacked! - I fear that this latest Robin/Ethan/Conni storyline is causing the strip to jump the proverbial shark, but I have some faith in Willis' abilities as a 'toonist.

3. Criminal Minds - Well, I am a little annoyed at the fans who perpetually want pretty-boy Dr. Reid to have gay sex with the other male characters...

4. Knights of the Dinner Table/Fuzzy Knights - What can you say? I have a hot streak going for suggesting cover ideas!

5. My Own Fans (for Chillin' Out) - I need their support if I can get the print compilation to launch.

This is a postscript to that post about the weird Hogwarts dream I had earlier.

When I thought about it, I came up with an invention of sorts. I bet somebody else in Harry Potter fandom has already come up with it, so I doubt I'm stealing anybody's thunder.

It's a parody of the 1920s "Tommy Gun". How it works: you slip your wand into the space on the "gun" where the breech would be on a real Tommy, and then you'd speak your spell into the magazine. The magazine would multiply your spell by fifty, and then you'd fit the magazine to the underside of the "gun". Flip off the safety, and you're ready to cast.

Because of its construction material, it's called a Chicago Woodwind. :)

If something like this is really in any of the post-movies books, then I plead ignorance. As said, I haven't read any of the books. Nor do I read fanfic. *shrug*

...I'm very glad I'm not doing Nanowrimo.

Overnight I had a weird dream I was a character in a Harry Potter side story, set at the same time as Chamber of Secrets. I was a stereotypically brash American exchange student, making the other Gryffyndor (probably spelled wrong, not going to look it up to check, as I don't have the books, can't play DVDs on this compy, and don't want to disturb Dad's nap) students wonder why I wasn't sorted to Ravenclaw. I treated my wand like a cowboy's Colt .45 pistol and generally played up my not-Britishness. My schtick: possessing animals and using them to spy on the other students and faculty.

Perhaps it's an okay idea, but except for the movies, I'm not a Potter fan as such. I don't feel an urge to actually write it, as I know I'm competing with millions of fanfic'ers who can do it better.

But like that incident with the bowl of geraniums in Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, if I could figure out WHY I had that dream, I could probably understand a lot more about who I am.

1) Just replaced the main fan. Cut the db's to a third. So now I'm cool running, if not yet silent running. I don't know if I'll get the motherboard fan at Staples or somewhere else.

2) On National Public Radio's "All Things Considered", The Ninja of Ask-A-Ninja just reviewed Pirates of the Caribbean 2. Very funny review. It'll be up on their website in a few hours...when it does, I'll post a link. NPR promises that the next time a Ninja movie comes along, they'll have a Pirate review it. Does that mean, when a Robot movie appears, they'll get a Monkey to review it, and vice versa?

NPR also gave a good review of Scanner Darkly. I dunno...I have an aversion to Woody Harrelson. *shrug*

1) While waiting for Live Trumps to re-establish its combat capability as Combat Cards 2.0, I Friended two LJ users who are my LT/CC "grandchildren". I have absolutely no idea who they are, only that they are thusly connected to me.

2) The Dollar General/Bandai anime DVD hunt progress report: today I bought Gundam 08th MS Team: Miller's Report, which I didn't expect to see. Saw the first half-hour or so of Red Spectacles the other day and deem it perhaps the weirdest movie I've ever seen. I saw the side-story/prequel Stray Dog in one of the DG stores...so I'm mulling over whether to buy that one too.

3) Priced CPU fan units at Staples the other evening. They aren't as dear as I thought they'd be...so I'll probably buy them soon.

Hey.

As some (if not most) of you know, inside the CPU case of a computer is two electric fans, one for the motherboard's chip and one for everything else.

As my computer is sitting atop my desk, and is open on all four sides, my thinking was that it got adequate air circulation, so I originally disconnected the everything-else fan because the two fans together are just too noisy.

Today I re-connected the everything-else fan for summer, and I'm trying to get used to it. Man, I wish these things were quieter.

Hey.

I haven't lived in a house with operational air conditioning in so long I've forgotten to miss it. I love air conditioning. I love de-humidification. I wish this house I'm in now had both.

Instead, I consume some sort of liquid beverage, every waking hour, practically on the hour. Right now there is a partially enjoyed tankard of tea on my desk while I'm writing this blog. I know the hydration is important but wish I didn't have to do so much of it.

I'm sick of ceiling fans. My father likes them so he installed them in the kitchen, the living room, the dining room and his master bedroom. But the ceiling in my room is too low for one, thank the 19th Century architects of this farmhouse.

I'm weary of "rustic". Sure the house we moved from in Florida was no prize but at least the outside walls were cinder block and stucco--and the floors concrete. This house?--I bet the groundhogs burrowing under the foundation walls ultimately condemn the place.

I know I should be grateful I have a "home". But this isn't my home and it will never be my home. I want to go home.
