Tough Times
Aug. 24th, 2009 02:37 pmRefueled Moonshine and went to the library a little while ago. Looked at the local paper. Still loads of classified ad notices on foreclosures and sales of property and no employment want ads. But since I'm going back to school soon that doesn't matter as much to me now as it had been.
Jefferson City's government was attempting to take advantage of the economic situation to annex properties on the outskirts of the City Limits and expand, but it looks like this won't fly with the citizens or the business community. I wonder if this is part of a National trend among municipal governments...expand into the unincorporated zones and extort new revenue streams from the conquered peons.

I just got a notice from the State Capital that I have been approved for a Lottery Fund scholarship. Up to $2,000. On top of the Federal funding I have already been promised! The school will decide how much I actually qualify for and will receive. I find out tomorrow.
Meanwhile I'm trying to get to Disney's website and my itinerary for the December trip, so I can compare it to the school calendar. The Fall term should end by the time I have planned to go to Florida, but I don't know for certain and I don't have proof from Disney that they got my information. I don't want to have to sign up all over again. :/

DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME. Then again, who owns more than one anvil these days?
"Popcorn" Sutton, one of the most notorious moonshiners in Tennessee history, has died while awaiting sentencing.
Different man than the one I alluded to earlier this week.

No Room To Jump
Feb. 6th, 2009 04:15 pmHey.
I was on another shopping trip today. At a shopping mall, the fellow next to me had the hood up on his truck, so I dutifully looked in Moonshine's trunk for my jumper cables. Once I found them, I asked the other driver if he needed a jump start.
He refused, but it was impossible to figure out his reasoning because he (and his teenage son/friend/I don't know what) spoke in a voice in which two accents--Tennessee twang and Hispanic immigrant--were fighting it out and the English language was the casualty.
Times like that remind me that I am the foreigner here.

Vending Machine Of Awesome For Friday
Jan. 23rd, 2009 12:38 amWe moved from Pennsylvania to Florida because we hated winter so much--and then had to move to this frickin' place because we couldn't afford to stay in Florida. I'm entitled to gripe about this cold snap.
The Content Of His Character
Jan. 20th, 2009 04:30 pmOn my way back to my house after a shopping trip, I drove behind a pickup truck with racist anti-Obama bumper stickers on it.
My feeling is that perhaps the greater America is ready for an African-American President, but too many Americans are going to judge Obama by the color of his skin before he shows us enough of his character for them to decide if he's American FIRST. And some don't want to give him a chance AT ALL.

Seismic Events
Dec. 17th, 2008 10:41 pmAn Earthquake Happened Near Here. It sounded like a very loud truck going past. I didn't feel it so much, but I was seated in a castered chair and if the earth moved I could have blamed the chair.
View From a "Red" State
Nov. 5th, 2008 08:29 pmIf you were unaware, Tennessee went for McCain over Obama by fifteen percentage points. The only areas in the state that Obama did better than McCain were Nashville, Memphis and a few suburbs of Memphis. People here are shocked and dismayed that McCain lost. What's worse, they resent the national coverage of showing the celebrations in the cities and the national Republicans being so quick to give up.
Quite a few people here see Obama as an alien, a traitor and a threat. Perhaps the silent majority will give Obama a chance, but I'm afraid of how many will not and take matters into their own hands. "PUMA" may soon be replaced with "NUMA" (National Unity...).
America may not be racist as a whole, but Tennessee is still more racist than outsiders may realize.
BTW, I considered it a foregone conclusion long ago that Obama would carry the National popular vote and probably the Electoral vote, but totally fail to carry Tennessee. That's why I voted for Brian Moore, in addition to the fact that nobody talked me out of it.

Writer's Block: Health Care
Sep. 23rd, 2008 01:25 pm[Error: unknown template qotd]
In my case, it is a mere impossibility. Just to reiterate, last year, I applied for TennCare so it could fund my psychiatric examination and possible treatment. The coverage was revoked this spring just as the examination was wrapping up. So if my psychologist had recommended treatment (which he didn't) I would have had to pay for it out of pocket--or do without.
I'm unemployed and uninsured. If something happens to me, all I have is a very few stocks to cash in (my savings) and at this point, they could only pay for a couple doctor visits at best.
I'm not asking for socialized medicine. I just want a better way than what we have.

My Old-Timey Isn't Their Old-Timey
Aug. 7th, 2008 04:09 pmHey.
As a promotion a local store was offering free "Old Tyme" photos taken of their customers today. They had a trailer wagon set up for the photography. Thing is, I've seen a lot of this stuff in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge over the years, and I can't say that it would work for me from the choices usually given. Old West?--Been there, done that. (Mom went Way Out West for a conference/vacation/family reunion when I was a kid, and brought back Western shirts and cowboy hats for me and my brother. I wore that Western shirt for one of my school pictures. Can't say I'm particularly proud of that.) Civil War?--Got a good buddy who is a real re-enactor, and if I wanted to, I could just go to him. Of course, anything "hillbilly" just galls my very strong "Yankee" sensibilities. (Okay, maybe I'm kidding, but I don't like this place very much, and "going native" is as cynical as it is politically incorrect.)
Meanwhile, I've posed in front of P-51 Mustangs, P-40 Warhawks, and various other pieces of airmobile hardware. I've even gotten in the cockpit of a replica Fokker D.VII biplane for a shoot. Not in period costume, tho'.
*Starts rumination*

I know it's weird to get all touristy now, as I've lived here far longer than I wanted to, but I'm leaving soon. So anyway...
Dandridge is one of the oldest towns in Tennessee. It's set along the French Broad River upstream of Douglas Dam. It's the County Seat of Jefferson County and the old courthouse is an okay place to visit. The actual courts have moved to a new facility closer to the Interstate exit, so the only official business done in the building involves the tax assessor and the records and cashier offices that go with it. Those may move out as well, relegating the building to just a museum.
The county Historical Society keeps its exhibits there, which run the gamut from Cherokee Indian artifacts to pioneer tools to weapons of various wars (Civil War to Iraqi Freedom) to personal items of important people in the development of the County.
The weapon display was the reason why I came to the courthouse last week.

( And Four More )
Now, I know it doesn't seem all that interesting...but I look at the thing from a gamer's perspective. I didn't photograph the rifles and shotguns and sub-machineguns on display, but just looking at them close-up brings home the reality that I can't get from books. Yeah, I can tell you that a Civil War 12-Pound cannon ball is about the size of a cantalope melon, but seeing one, and imagining it flying at a good fraction of the speed of sound? Or thinking...how long could I march with one of those rifles in my hands before I'd get tired?
Every gamer should look at real war hardware as often as he or she can. Check out the tank in front of the American Legion/VFW hall or National Guard post. Find a local museum or battlefield. Go to a big museum on vacation. Just reading about it, or seeing movies or TV, isn't enough.

Attitude Check
Feb. 15th, 2007 12:42 amThanks to a Job want ads circular I found, I learned a fact about east Tennessee...
...Salaries here generally run about 25% below the National Average.
So to paraphrase Tom Clancy (Red Storm Rising)--
"Attitude Check!"--"I HATE this sucky place!"
"Positive Attitude Check!"--"I POSITIVELY hate this sucky place!"
"Negative Attitude Check!"--"I DON'T LIKE this sucky place!"
"Short Attitude Check!"--"This place SUCKS!"

PS (from Freewill Astrology):
Sagittarius Horoscope for Week of February 15th...
You want hot gold secrets to ripen in your dark candy soul? Then here's what you do: Study the ocean's memory for its teachings about moon victories. Extract a fresh green why from the book of storms you dreamed about. When the flowers' clouds soar over your shadow, and when night's funny sky has turned into warm moist roars, you'll know exactly how to look through the sun to the other side of your best fear. (The preceding horoscope may sound crazily lyrical, even poetically feral, but it's a perfect embodiment of the attitude you should cultivate in order to have a successful week.)
Looks like I'm going to need my Captain Midnight Code-O-Graph for this one. And another Mounds bar.

Back In Tennessee
Dec. 23rd, 2005 12:11 amI am writing this from my own compy, sipping actual tea (not that Arizona stuff that comes in huge plastic jugs), noshing on Monkey Bread and contemplating a long snooze in my own bed not too long from now.
I probably could have stayed down there today/Thursday and come back today/Friday (don't you love the time warp that comes with doing something at Midnight?) but the traffic through Georgia was heavy enough to confirm my wisdom...it can only get worse today/Friday and tomorrow/Saturday. Atlanta was a darned madhouse.
I didn't get to see everybody I wanted or do all that much (as in Holiday Shopping--I'm horribly behind!) but overall the trip worked pretty well.
Latest excuse for wearing my hair long: "Would you believe I'm mourning the death of my barber?"
