Sagittarius Horoscope for week of December 1, 2016

A journalist dared composer John Cage to "summarize himself in a nutshell." Cage said, "Get yourself out of whatever cage you find yourself in." He might have added, "Avoid the nutshells that anyone tries to put you in." This is always fun work to attend to, of course, but I especially recommend it to you Sagittarians right now. You're in the time of year that's close to the moment when you first barged out of your mom's womb, where you had been housed for months. The coming weeks will be an excellent phase to attempt a similar if somewhat less extravagant trick.

The problem is I want to go but can't.  At least, not to any place I feel the need that is beyond my usual circles.

Sagittarius Horoscope for week of August 20, 2015

Located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the Museum of Failed Products is a warehouse full of consumer goods that companies created but no one wanted to buy. It includes caffeinated beer, yogurt shampoo, fortune cookies for dogs, and breath mints that resemble vials of crack cocaine. The most frequent visitors to the museum are executives seeking to educate themselves about what errors to avoid in their own companies' future product development. I encourage you to be inspired by this place, Sagittarius. Take an inventory of the wrong turns you've made in the past. Use what you learn to create a revised master plan.

*
I think the wrongest turn I ever made was moving to Tennessee.  But I can't do anything about that.

I'm sorry I didn't get to hear your rap song today
My car was on fumes and I came to a station that would accept my plastic
I had to switch off the ignition so I could unlock the fuel cap
And that meant your would-be driveway moment wasn't gonna pass
I'll try to turn you all back on as fast as I could
The car's tank only holds about ten gallons...

But you're gone, and the radio already moved on to the next number on the playlist
And the deejay's left for the wings so I won't know what I've missed
I'm back on the street--that main drag pointed at the heart of town
Disgusted with the tune that replaced you so I turn the radio down
This errand is taking forever
I want to pull over
But I never do

That place I thought would never go away is gone
They've torn down the building and workmen are clearing out the rubble
Will it sit empty for ten years, or are they going to put something new there in a month
I don't know who to ask who would know or care
It's just a shock, though
I guess it will pass

This town just seems to have all the wrong businesses
Though I have no idea what the right ones could be
Stay here too long and you'll just want to move on to the next one
But the next town over is pretty much the same
And so's the one after that...and the one after that...
So why bother?
Where can you go from here?

That shopping center is an eyesore--the whole place is run down
They're replacing the old cheap supermarket with a cheaper one
So half the tenants that were there are closing or moving
The only place that seems to want to stay is a chain that has seven other locations here
Which makes no sense
They can't afford to do that

Yeah, my plan on leaving the house included that store downtown
But I changed my mind because I've had enough of messing with this traffic
If that traffic light had changed just a little earlier, before I committed
I could have taken that highway out through Baneberry
Now I have no choice
Back the way I came

December here only has one kind of weather
And the word for that kind of weather is "bleak"
It's bleak when it's cloudy because it never is cold enough for the snow lovers
It's bleak when it's sunny because the wind smacks down the sun lovers
There isn't even anything to satisfy the haters
So it's best just to be indifferent and give up caring

They won't play another rap song on the station I'm listening to
Because it's the wrong time of year
And they need to play something very long for a staff meeting
The deejay won't be back for at least thirty minutes
So I just shut it off
This car will be back in its carport before he returns...

Dad has plunged headlong into his gardening and landscaping this summer. I fear he feels obliged to garden for two, and at his state of health I worry.

When we were living in a suburb of Erie in the 1970s, one of his co-workers, a fellow named Schroeder, came and worked on our garden because he didn't have one of his own.

I think we need somebody like that now.

* The Criminal Minds finale was done as if they had a possibility of the show being cancelled. I don't think it is being cancelled, but unfortunately they jumped a lot of shark this season and I'm not as loyal a fan as I used to be.

* This place, that seemed so cozy and even cramped when Mum was around, is so much larger and colder now that she's gone.

* I now have the hard drive from Mum's computer in an external case just like I arranged for Kong's hard drive. Overday I'll show it to my mother's writer buddy and see if she's interested in finishing Jane's last book.

* Dad found a Wal*Mart gift card in Mum's purse. I took it over there to see if they would still honor it. Turns out they would--but Mum spent most of it and it's only worth $1.13 now. Golly, what's the most special thing I could possibly buy there for a dollar?

Akron. Granted, this was the Akron in 1974, so Akron now is probably very different and likely to be more hospitable.

Peculiar thing...Publisher's Clearing House is currently having a sweepstakes with the prize being "$3,000,000 in cash to put towards a Dream Home". The first thought I had would be that I would be more satisfied with a dozen $250,000 homes scattered around the nation (or the world) than with just one top-of-the-line house no matter where it is.

The State of Tennessee. It just doesn't want me to be happy, or let me do anything I want to do.

There are churches all around that have big, involved, probably expensive playground equipment installations in their yards--and you never EVER see any kids playing on them.

I think this is evidence of a fatal flaw in American Christian culture.

Is He Singing To An Ex-Lover--Or To The City?

R.E.M., "Leaving New York"

Some say it's about 9/11/2001, but I think it's much more than that.

Originally I was a suburbs kid, but I've lived in the rural hinterlands longer than anyplace else. It hasn't been my choice, tho'.

Most of the planning I have ever done has been undone either by circumstance or the actions of others. I live in the moment, but I also console myself by living in the else moment.

The other night I dreamed that, once a shopping mall's tenant viability had sunken below a subsistance level, the property had instead repurposed itself as an indoor amusement park. All the interior decor had changed, from walls to flooring to lighting, but it was all still in the same general shell exterior it had as a center of retail commerce.

In the coming years I would make it a regular haunt, playing some of the games and lunching on weiners and chips.

Since the house I'm living isn't mine, my desire is to be wealthy and independent enough to move elsewhere.

In the meantime, this house needs:
* A new roof and gutter system;
* Two new bathrooms and a tankless water heater;
* The foundation and floors stabilized, strengthened and straightened-out.

Tasks far beyond what we are capable of doing. But the problem was that this house was the best thing that my parents could afford.

Ten years ago, I might have come up with a better answer than I can now. I'm in the same situation I was ten years back--living in a place I hate because my parents love it, where there's next to nothing for me and next to everything for them, and no good reason for me to leave and all the compelling reasons to stay.

Sagittarius Horoscope for week of December 31, 2009

You Sagittarians may wander farther and wider than the other signs of the zodiac, and you may get itchier when required to stay in one place too long, but you still need a sense of belonging. Whether that comes from having a certain building where you feel comfortable or a wilderness that evokes your beloved adventurousness or a tribe that gives you a sense of community, you thrive when you're in regular touch with a homing signal that keeps you grounded. According to my analysis, 2010 will be prime time for you to find or create or renew your connection to a source that serves this purpose well.

Having had a recent glimpse in the world that will never be mine makes me long for the world that is meant to be mine. Something, somewhere must receive me. I don't know what or where now, but I will keep looking.
