Broke My Own Heart Tonight
May. 7th, 2012 09:54 pmI was wondering where Mum's Kobo e-reader was so this morning I got Dad to find it. It turned out that he had set it on his dresser without knowing what it was.
Tonight I finally figured out what I did wrong when it came to uploading Mum's books on it. Now they work.
It would have made her so proud and happy to see her own books on its screen. But she never got the chance.
I'm going to have a lot of times like this, I think.

Meals Closer To Revolution
Apr. 15th, 2012 12:41 amI'm a net two meals closer to Revolution than I was this time yesterday.
The refrigerator ruined a better part of a pound of sausage overday. We have a problem with condensation or ice crystals that melt then refreeze.
Anybody know a good refrigeration techie on the East side of Tennessee who makes house calls?

Be On The Lookout...
Jan. 16th, 2012 02:43 pmTHIS is the Malware that took Precious out of action over the weekend. Update your protection software if you can because this is one (in the words of Mission Control in Thexder for Windows 95) pretty obnoxious crock of crud.
Okay...This Is Strange
Aug. 7th, 2011 04:10 pmFor the last few days, my Windows 7 Pro has lost its East Asian Language Support. Which means, among a few things, I can't translate the titles of dozens of anime soundtrack songs I have loaded onto WinAmp. The foreign characters display fine on Internet Explorer and other programs, but not on internal Win7 functions like directories and filenames. They don't display in Notepad either.
Windows Update isn't as functional in Win7 as it was in previous versions of Windows. I don't know what I should do about this. I'm not sure I still have the master disks for the OS--Computer King has the nasty habit of just installing the OS and keeping the disks.

Take THAT--Runaround!
Jul. 1st, 2011 04:10 pmAT&T has the best customer service system in the world. I mean it. They hire terrific people and you can reach some of them 24/7.
But that nice, ardent, professional woman and her good work is lost on me today because her phone makes her sound like she's way in the back of a shipping container she shares with a stepdown power transformer.
Still, in spite of this difficulty and others I've endured over the last few weeks, I was able to on this day:
*) Pay the first Wireless Internet bill for Rather Manor (although it was past due)
*) Correct the billing information for the Wireless Internet account (so it wouldn't bounce back like the first bill did)
*) Link the Wireless Internet account with the Landline account for Rather Manor so
*) We might be able to BUNDLE services and save some moolah
And I did it on ATT.com, whose veracity measures are needlessly difficult for legitimate users while still leaving gaping holes for cyberfraudsters. Tho' I doubt there can be a lot gained from the information available to the phone company and the individual endusers.

Returning To Form
Jun. 8th, 2011 05:08 pmWith the new wireless system some habits are changing. I'm not using the Internet as often as I was, but I'm more at liberty to keep logged in for longer than I used to...even though I'm still worried somewhat about reliability and the monthly limit AT&T has in place. As I type this, I've just passed 700 Meg on a 5 Gig quota. This is the sixth day of the billing cycle and I haven't even made it to the fifth day budget yet, so I think I'm in good shape to avoid an overage.
I'm on the second try of downloading a movie I've talked about before on this blog. The first try, I went to an Asian website because it's an Asian movie. Bad move. A foreign virus defense program installed itself on Precious and immediately a war broke out between it and the pre-installed antivirus programs already in operation. Had to take some drastic action, including removing the interloper programming, to re-establish peace and tranquility. Second attempt: a torrent. Better move, although I had to shut off a Malware defense program to keep it from blocking seeds from connecting. So far I've got 2.3% of the movie. I'm in no hurry. If it takes me a week or two to get it, that's fine.

No, It Isn't Working
Jun. 3rd, 2011 12:25 pmI'm at the Dandridge Library enduring crying babies and the noise of motorboats from the fishing tournament across Douglas Lake.
The AT&T wireless modem gave up working about dinnertime last night. I've tried to use it repeatedly since and have gotten nowhere. Dunno if the problem is in us, in them, or somewhere in between.

When Monday Waits For Tuesday To Kick In
May. 30th, 2011 09:59 pmThe Great Rather Manor Internet Service Switchover: Update
Dana couldn't help us other than to give us a little advice, so on the morrow, after the bread run, we'll hit the usual suspects (Radio Shack, AT&T, US Cellular) and see what kind of wireless connectivity is available.
None of us (myself, Mum, Dad) likes this situation but Mum's professional life depends on us having Internet access and time is of the essence.

Tough Times
May. 27th, 2011 04:42 pmTook Mum to Knoville today so we could visit Virtual Interactive Center (our ISP) and talk to Josh (our service rep). The bad news:
VIC is also discontinuing their e-mail and web hosting services. Mum's mail will be phased out in a few months and her website will need new hosting probably in less than a year.
Since Mum has accounts with other webservices we can migrate her e-mail pretty easily, but doing something about her website is going to take some creativity.
It's a shame that VIC is dropping our business because in our view they've always been a class operation and we like them just as much now as we did in 1997 when we started.
PS: I bought my box set of Wings of War: Fire In The Sky. Going to open it this evening.
