--Or my father buys a convertable in January.

Again, he makes a purchase without consulting me, at all.

This afternoon, he went on an errand, and I called his cell phone to relay somebody else's phone message and find out why he had stayed out longer than usual. He tells me "Come over here to the bank and pick me up."

And so I go there and he tells me to leave Moonshine there and come with him in the truck...

...We go to a used car place in Morristown that is an apparent subsidiary of Fox Motors of Clinton. And I watch him sign paperwork to take delivery of--

--A 1998 Volkswagen Golf Cabrio. White paint and white top. Lower mileage than on my own car.

He took a test drive in it, and then eventually I got the keys to drive it back to Rather Manor, and then he took me back to the bank to get Moonshine back as well.

He didn't trade in his truck either. We're back to being a three-car household.

Pictures to come.

I was having problems with uploading up to tonight, but I guess it was because there were glitches in the software driving my modem. New software put on it a couple hours ago, seems to be working.

Strangely enough, The Doors. It all goes back to a trip I took in the Spring of 1984 with my classmate Chuck Oppermann, from Florida to Asheville to visit my sister Lynn at college. His car was a VW 411 fastback and it was equipped with a jury-rigged 8-track cassette player. Our selection was limited to Derek and the Dominoes, Jimi Hendrix, Chicago and The Doors...and oddly enough The Doors tapes worked the best.

My sister sold her currently moribund VW for $1 to a student mechanic who hopes to fix it up as a gift to his own sister. No, I am not the student mechanic. I'm just writing this as I know there are interested parties out there following this story.

*) My sister's husband is set against her buying another VW. She test-drove a Kia yesterday. Dunno if she likes it enough to buy it.

*) While looking for other things, I came upon the Ford Super Pursuit, which is an Australian vehicle that is a Mustang front end combined with a pickup bed. They don't sell those in America because the Department of Transportation's laws regarding Light Trucks have been written by twerps. There has always been demand for these sorts of machines here, but the law has pushed the compact pickup truck instead for the job since the 1970s.

*) BP has a scratch-off sweepstakes going on now, but it doesn't have a Second Chance like previous ones. We won Second Chance drawings a couple times. Instead, BP says, "if you don't win, go to our website to download free Hannah Montana digital content." Which begs the question, who, older than 18 years of age and buying BP gasoline, would WANT Hannah Montana digital content?

*) I've needed to write a scene for a comic book for weeks now and haven't felt in the mood for it.

*) I rolled dice last night to set the budget for my Florida trip. It came to $372. I'm sure that sounds like very little to some of you, but for me that is a fortune.

My sister's VW TDI New Beetle, a.k.a. "Bianca", died this past week from a terminal case of Turboculosis. Since she is determined to find another such animal, I did a quick search of AutoTrader.com and sent the results to her just now.

Unlike two years plus ago, TDI Beetles are more common and more reasonably priced.

The last search brought me to Chattanooga. I wonder where it will take me this time.

And, As It Turns Out, Volkswagens. How About That? )

I heard he has a different version of this song on all his albums. I'd rather listen to this instead of the thrice-damned "Freebird".

Weirdness is like my oxygen sometimes.

Did a lot of shopping today, as the weather was nice and I hated the idea of sitting between two TVs, one showing football and the other showing golf and both of them with the volume a little too loud. Wound up getting four boxes of herbal tea and a couple things for my brother for housewarming/upcoming birthday.

Anyway, I was in a Tuesday Morning discount store and saw a coffee table book on celebs who collect cars. Race cars, luxury cars, rare cars...and one fellow who is into concept cars. He has this machine in his collection:

The Chrysler D'Elegance, built by Ghia in the early Fifties along with other Chrysler concepts and stylewise the father of the VW Karmann Ghia.

Didn't buy the book but perhaps I may go back for it someday. When I got back here I got to looking through pictures of other such concept cars from that and other eras, not just online, but in a book I bought when I was a cashier at a Borders bookstore. One weirdness idea of mine would be to artistically backdate the history of GM's Saturn marque, as if it existed in those decades instead of Oldsmobile or LaSalle or some other brand of the times. Take some features of the current Saturn cars and some features of the Motorama concept cars and some features that production cars had and breed some hybrids.

I'm already thinking up names for spurious cars, mainly based on the moons of the planet Saturn and the Titans of classical mythology, as well as temporal terminology (as Saturn, as the Greek character Cronus, was the master of time).

Moonshine has job security...but I can dream about having a weird car.

Still decompressing from being my sister's chauffeur to Jawjaw to take delivery of her new-to-her VW Beetle. The dealers did a great job on 1) spiffing up the car 2) being nice to her and making the paperwork go smoothly and easily for her.

She and her fiance are both very excited to get the car and I'm sure they'll go for a joyride after Church today.

I drove Sis' outgoing (but not sold yet) Honda Odyssey and got my first taste of Cruise Control. (I can't remember if my car actually has CC or not.) Okay. It's useful. But to me it's also a little scary.

Lessee...

May have bagged a Diesel Bug for my sister in Chattanooga. May go there on Saturday with Sis to check it out.

When Dad and me visited Otis (neighbor recovering from stroke at Ft. Sanders Hospital) this afternoon, Patricia Neal herself was there and all three of us got to meet her. Just watched one of her movies on video to commerate yon acquaintence.

Bought a book for a buddy of mine. Not mentioning the book or the buddy as it would be a surprise and I don't know if he reads this blog.

Found a glitch that had been causing my trouble. Thanks to LJ.

Man, life is getting exciting. More to come. :|

Today is the State Primary in Tennessee...so I voted. It's a shame that for many positions, the Republicans are running unopposed. How do we get more socially-active Democrats here to vote for? Don't ask me to run, I'm a socially-untouchable Democrat.

Habits on voting:

If somebody tries to glad-hand me on the way into the polling place, I'll vote for the competing candidate.

I usually vote YES on all the judges. If they all want the job, they should be stuck with it.

I try to research the referendi before I vote on them. There weren't any this time, thank goodness.

...or cars.com has a real BUG in it.

Just spent the midday running to car dealerships to check to see whether the Volkswagen Beetles they had for sale were in fact Diesel-powered. Nope, they weren't.

I am shopping on behalf of my elder sister, who is selling off her Honda minivan as with Gennie going to college she doesn't need such a big vehicle...and wants something cute that can run on bioDiesel. And so a diesel Beetle would be ideal.

So she looked up cars.com and keyworded "diesel" in her search...

Only, as I found out, cars.com has defaults on what information they add to a car's listing if the dealer only gives the VIN number. And sometimes the information is faulty...like as to whether a specific car runs on diesel or ordinary gasoline.

Later tonight I have to give Sis the bad news. :( Diesel Beetles are RARE critters indeed...catching one is going to take a real safari effort.
