No sooner did I make my previous post as my brother-in-law reminded me of something that I had forgotten.  As a result I was able to get my data off the old hard drive.  Not all of it, but enough of it to put me back in business--and I can transfer more of it if necessary.

Now I'm wondering what programs I should get to replace the ones I "lost", as I've gone from Win10 32-bit to Win10 64-bit.  Complicating matters is the fact that this computer is now old enough that I ought to plan on an upgrade sooner rather than later.  I don't like this obsolescence thingy very much.

Windows supports just over 3800 kanji (Japanese ideographic characters--the majority of their writing system).

Okay, I've tried removing the site's cookies again. I'm poking around trying to find other issues with Livejournal and why I can't log in as normal.

Just got back from Computer King to attempt to solve the issue with the OS. Turns out (since I couldn't replicate the problem) it had nothing to do with the OS, mostly the modem and how it accesses the 'Net.

I don't know what I'll do next.

Sagittarius Horoscope for week of November 15, 2012

"They will say you are on the wrong road," said poet Antonio Porchia, "if it is your own." I suspect you may have to deal with wrong-headed badgering like that in the coming weeks, Sagittarius. In fact, you could experience a surge of discouraging words and bad advice that tries to shoo you away from the path with heart. Some of the push may come from enemies, some from friends or loved ones, and some from deluded little voices in your own head. I hope you won't be demoralized by the onslaught, but will instead respond like a brave hero who uses adversity as a motivating force.

I'd requote myself from the Book of Tepid, but that can wait.

In other news, LJ seems to be back to normal on Precious, so it must have been an error in Windows that was corrected with the latest Update.

For the last few days, my Windows 7 Pro has lost its East Asian Language Support. Which means, among a few things, I can't translate the titles of dozens of anime soundtrack songs I have loaded onto WinAmp. The foreign characters display fine on Internet Explorer and other programs, but not on internal Win7 functions like directories and filenames. They don't display in Notepad either.

Windows Update isn't as functional in Win7 as it was in previous versions of Windows. I don't know what I should do about this. I'm not sure I still have the master disks for the OS--Computer King has the nasty habit of just installing the OS and keeping the disks.

After some battles with the Death Star, we secured an LG AT&T USBConnect Adrenaline Quickstart (with the frickin' two-year contract) for Mom's computer. So far, the new wireless account works with her Internet Explorer, but not with Windows Live Mail. The latter isn't so bad as VIC is still offering WebMail--for the moment. I hope I can network Precious with her compy soon so I can also use the wireless account...but there are no guarantees yet.

VIC dial-up service ends in nine hours. I'm going to try to get as much out of it as I can still.

What happened was that after I'd done some work converting the Armor suits, I noticed that I had skipped one of the later Technical Readout books that I have in my collection. So I got out some ledger paper sheets, jotted down the converted facts and figures on 56 here-to-fore "forgotten" 'Mechs, and was all set to bubble them into my Database files--

--Only to find that not only does Precious lack the program that the files were created using, but the only other program I have for database work, OpenOffice.org 3.2, doesn't recognize the .WDB format. "It's not a bug, it's a feature" say the Internet voices.

So you are saying, "Well, why doncha re-install the software you DID use before onto Precious?" and that point is quite logically valid. The problem is the "security" measures that Microsoft puts on their software to limit your right to profigate it among your hardware systems. Besides, I'm working with a new operating system anyway and the old software may not work.

The data files are not going anywhere, and I have them on backups, so this can wait till I acquire the new version, whenever that will be. In the meantime, I'm saving myself from entering in five or six pages of hard data. This is not procrastination--this is taking the time to do the job right.

It's been rare that both my mother's computer and my own run the same operating system. For a while we both had WinXP but then her hard drive crashed and got replaced with one with Win98 and it took till just recently to get beyond it.

When the Computer King boys tried to sell me on the idea of having Linux on Precious--when we had gone through so much trouble to get Mum's computer to have Windows 7, I was yea-close to going totally ballistic. So they put Win7 on mine...

And I check just a while ago. Mum has Win7 HOME on hers...I have Win7 PRO on mine! Just enough differences to make it an ordeal to work with.

I'm in for a long and tricky weekend.

Okay, for want of a keyboard, we screw up the OS on Mum's 'puter and with it her Internet connectivity. Put Win7 on it last night, and it doesn't recognize all the hardware on it yet. At Computer King now, and they're pushing Linux...which only angers us as we're paying good money for Win7 and it's what Mum's WORK calls for.

We'll straighten this out. It's not brain surgery...yet.

PS: Now it IS brain surgery. The repairmen and I have declared Mum's computer functionally obsolete, so it is going to be merged with hardware from "Dissected Cow" (the computer motherboard/case set my buddy Stanley and his friends gave us) and new hardware ala carte, to make Bride of FrankIntelTM (name not official yet).

Mum's computer is on an enforced vacation, thanks to Microsoft. Because of a hardware glitch/incompatibility issue, I had to re-install the compy's WinXP OS a couple weeks ago. Tried to activate it, and evidently not only did the activation fail, so did my further attempts to work around it. Now the OS is locking us out and we can't even boot her computer in Safe Mode. Tonight I pulled out the hard drive, piggybacked it into my own compy, and saw that the data is safe (so far) but I still don't know how I'm going to adjust Mum's hard drive so the computer can boot again. I won't do any more work on the problem tonight because, well, it never is a good idea to do tech support after midnight if you have the choice. I'll probably do some more piggybacking, pulling data out, putting data in, and trying other methods.

If we had the money, we'd have upgraded BOTH computers to a more modern version of Windows and not have these problems.

Okay. I had narrowed my problem to the FFDShow Video Decoder. After a moment's rumination (perhaps the fastest such event in recent times) I came upon the logical conclusion:

* Go Download the LATEST VERSION! *

So I did. And it works! On ZoomPlayer at least.

FP

PS: I got MediaPlayer Classic to work by disabling its internal FLV filter and making it use FFDShow's filters. And I upgraded my Windows Media Player 10 to the latest version, and it too is using the FFDShow filters. So now I have at least four player programs that will run .FLV files. More power...ruh ruh ruh.

I just spent most of the evening (and four attempts) to download and install Windows XP Service Pack 3. Part of the time, I left the computer hall and watched Doctor Who on DVD. (Problem is, I have no idea in which order to watch them, and I can't watch all the ones I have, because some are incompatible with my player [which is why I want a DVD-ROM for my computer nextish].)

Hey.

Anybody know how to "lock down" your IE's "Home" page so it can't be altered by a third party? This session started with it redirecting to a non-existant site.

*Shrug*

I reset it back to the one I normally use now:

Hey.

Found out (through process of elimination) what was a probable chink in the armor through which Winfixer's pop-ups were sneaking. One of my free anti-virus programs has a feature that automatically calls for an internet connection (for the purpose of making fast updates and such). By denying this feature, the Winfixer ads have been conspicuous by their absenses. My guess is that the ads were using a .dll file used by the anti-virus software as their way into my Internet Explorer.

I'm now firmly on the hunt for Bandai DVDs at the Dollar General stores. Today, I came to the halfway point of the task: to complete my sets of G-Gundam, The Big O II and the Gundam Wing TV series. 13 DVDs in the bag, 13 to go. There are about 30 stores in the area...I'm pretty optimistic that I'll find all the disks I seek.
