Good News: The damage to Precious was limited to the power supply, which was under warranty and has been replaced.

Bad News: Still have to pay for labor and didn't have enough moolah on hand, so I'll have to go to the bank first thing Monday and then pay the piper.

Well, at least I don't have to wait much longer than that one time we lost all our internet service.

Just before Seven this evening, an electrical spike hit Rather Manor and both Mum's office and my own. Mum's computer got through okay, but Precious took it on the chin. There was a strong smell of burnt circuitry coming from it when it was all over. So I get to go to Knoxville and Computer King for the bad news tomorrow. At least Precious is still under warranty.

Going to have to buy a new computer. Since it is my birthday, and this gadget is gonna cost me most of my savings, I suppose I'll have to dub it Precious.

PS: Kong lived for five and a half years, which is a pretty good run for a computer these days.

This is the Eff Pilot, y'all got your ears on, good buddy?

(This is for the benefit of my Facebook account, which for some reason has not received my latest posts from here.)

I keep getting text messages from people saying "I miss my cousin" on my cell phone.

This time the names have changed. Both sender and supposed recipient.

I think that's kind of creepy.

Just making sure that you can Now Hear This!--Klinger on M*A*S*H after he repaired the camp's PA system.

Just got the phone lines back. A cable somewhere burnt out in the switching unit that serves Rather Manor, so the repairman from AT&T told us.

I'm using a borrowed laptop (thanks Kiyo!) and a borrowed WiFi connection. The phone and Internet service at Rather Manor have been dead since Thursday night. Right now, I'm in the lobby of a hotel off I-40 at Exit 417, watching the end of the F1 race at Spa.

So...what have I done in the time since?

* a lot of "maintenance" on my computer...deleting files, including Cubis2, which I got disgusted with...

* shopping, with the haul comprising two packs of underwear and a 2mm lead-holder...

* drive around Sevier & Knox Counties...

* read three books. (Spook Country was proof enough how much I missed William Gibson...must read his other contemporarily-set books!)

The trojan spammer who has somehow hacked into my mail account struck again this week. I'm still trying to find ways to undo the damage.

In the meantime, I threw a new signature on my account. I repeat my "Dadah Means DEATH" line from my User Info here and go on to say that I don't approve of on-line medicine commerce. Messages that come from me with a sales pitch should be pitched.

I hope this irritates the spammer and he decides to move on to greener pastures.

But I want to counter-attack him more directly. Wish I knew how.

Somehow a spammer sent a message using my address and my Contact List. I don't know how it happened, or who to complain to. Grr.

My apologies to anyone who received the spam message.

PS: A somewhat silver lining...found out which entries of my Contact List were obsolete and cleaned them out. *shrug*

Not only was Maeflower (Mum's computer) on the rocks, but Dissected Cow (the one my friend game me) was also past its prime. So both of them are history and Computer King is assembling a custom system for Mum. It's only costing us $300, but it had to happen.

Okay, for want of a keyboard, we screw up the OS on Mum's 'puter and with it her Internet connectivity. Put Win7 on it last night, and it doesn't recognize all the hardware on it yet. At Computer King now, and they're pushing Linux...which only angers us as we're paying good money for Win7 and it's what Mum's WORK calls for.

We'll straighten this out. It's not brain surgery...yet.

PS: Now it IS brain surgery. The repairmen and I have declared Mum's computer functionally obsolete, so it is going to be merged with hardware from "Dissected Cow" (the computer motherboard/case set my buddy Stanley and his friends gave us) and new hardware ala carte, to make Bride of FrankIntelTM (name not official yet).

Mum's computer is on an enforced vacation, thanks to Microsoft. Because of a hardware glitch/incompatibility issue, I had to re-install the compy's WinXP OS a couple weeks ago. Tried to activate it, and evidently not only did the activation fail, so did my further attempts to work around it. Now the OS is locking us out and we can't even boot her computer in Safe Mode. Tonight I pulled out the hard drive, piggybacked it into my own compy, and saw that the data is safe (so far) but I still don't know how I'm going to adjust Mum's hard drive so the computer can boot again. I won't do any more work on the problem tonight because, well, it never is a good idea to do tech support after midnight if you have the choice. I'll probably do some more piggybacking, pulling data out, putting data in, and trying other methods.

If we had the money, we'd have upgraded BOTH computers to a more modern version of Windows and not have these problems.

Mum with her new toy. So far the hardware is working okay, but the software that is supposed to work with her computer isn't. The hardcopy manual is too dumbed-down and there is no "driver disk" as such. Dunno what I'll do about the problem.

Grr...

I still haven't gotten Mum's e-mail back for her--or even her "Bejeweled 2" for her!--and I'm not liking myself for having this slump happen at an unhelpful time.

First, The Vend )

The Question Of The Day post I put up on the 1st somehow got corrupted by an embedded advertisement set there after the fact. I can't delete the message or edit it. I'd complain to LJ but I doubt there's much they can do about it themselves. Meanwhile, I replied to [livejournal.com profile] nick_101's comment in said thread thusly:

Just thought up an idea for Ninja GALS--

"This just in: a downtown meatpacking plant was burglarized overnight. The thieves made off with five tons of bacon that was ready for shipment to a restaurant chain kitchen facility. We're sending you to our reporter on the scene--"

"--This heist has all the hallmarks of the notorious gang known as the Bacon Boys--" (Picture on screen of three redneck men and an enormous boar.) "--The Bacon Boys are considered armed, dangerous, and very well fed..."

Consequences of one spilled glass of iced tea...

Over the weekend Mum spilled a glass of iced tea on her twelve-year-old keyboard and killed half the membrane in it, so today we replaced the keyboard with a new one...

...Which her OS didn't recognize. So we upgraded her OS...

...Which made her computer forget the distinction of its own modem from a hole in the ground. And other sundry talents we find useful. So Mum's out of (online) circulation till we can sort this stuff out, and I accomplish the necessary troubleshooting.

Q: Anybody else see their settings on their LJ change without consent lately? I had to reset the posts-per-page setting on mine today. Weird thing to have to correct.

Got my not-fixed digital camera back from Olympus. Going to see about getting it to a shop in Asheville that was recommended by a family friend.

Spent most of the day off the Internet due to a wait for important phone calls. We will have our new water heater delivered sometime tomorrow.

As in...the water heater in Rather Manor burned out, yet again.

I'll try to stay downwind from everybody else.
