I saw Aleks at the hospital a couple hours ago. He was comatose, breathing through a ventilator machine and stuck with half a dozen IV tubes. I doubt he knew I was there.
His family knows about his condition. His nurse told me his sister visited him at least once. He was brought in the day BEFORE the day I had planned to see him but couldn't--so I'm absolved but not relieved. I still don't know what caused his predicament...it could have been an accident, or it could have been a stroke, or it could have been violence. I saw no clear evidence in any direction.
My folks tell me I've done all that I can be expected to do for him, and that if I try to do more I'll just drive myself crazy. But that is such an awful state to be in. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.
