Hate Speech

Just after dinnertime, we got an automated phone call--a recorded tirade from some fire-and-brimstone evangelist Christian pastor. The actual content of the message isn't worth repeating and he delivered it with so much anger and bile he could have melted down the phone's earpiece.

If we had Caller ID on the phone, we would have had the organization sued for hate speech. I mean, what if we were Jewish or Muslim or Hindu or Buddhist? It is sectarian harassment! I find it particularly galling as my parents are active participants in their own church, and had they heard this lout themselves they would have been insulted.

I think I'm going to copy this blog to the local newspapers. I believe in freedom of religion more than I believe in religion itself, but this matter is way over the line.

23. DOCTOR WHO (the current revival)
22. QUANTUM LEAP
21. FUTURAMA
20. STAR WARS: CLONE WARS
19. STARSHIP TROOPERS
18. HEROES
17. ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND
16. TOTAL RECALL
15. FIREFLY/SERENITY
14. CHILDREN OF MEN
13. THE TERMINATOR/ TERMINATOR 2
12. BACK TO THE FUTURE
11. LOST
10. THE THING
9. ALIENS
8. STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION
7. E.T.
6. BRAZIL
5. STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN
4. THE X-FILES
3. BLADE RUNNER
2. BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (the remake)
1. THE MATRIX

And from this my comments:
* V -- I felt it was overhyped, got into soap opera territory quickly (in a bad way) and got too cute with referencing other sci-fi shows.
* Quantum Leap -- Liked the pilot but the rest of the series lost me rather quickly.
* Clone Wars -- Haven't seen much of it but would rather put forth Disney's Gargoyles as an alternative. Way underrated as a sci-fi/fantasy/myth fusion concept.
* Starship Troopers -- When I finally got to see some of it, I wasn't much impressed. I mean, I sat through Space: Above & Beyond hoping for it to get better, and all I got from STroopers was deja vu about that.
* Firefly -- I used to joke that I didn't know it from Mantis. Now I really don't know it from Andromeda and Farscape.
* The Matrix -- I'm a big fan of William Gibson, dig. I'd like to have all his books, but I'm rather behind on that due to my anime and model kit habits. I have NOT seen any of the Matrix movies, tho'...because I'm afraid of how much they may have stolen from Gibson. And another thing while I'm on the subject: "Johnny Mnemonic" the short story and the movie of the same title have precious little relation to one another...but I also have to say that one version's strengths and the other version's weaknesses are cross reflected and balance each other out.
* Brazil and Blade Runner -- I want the special editions of both of these and somehow I will get them.
