The problem with the AI is that we really don't have a "killer application" for which the concept is particularly suited. That's why we've only talked about it since the Fifties and haven't actually put any AIs together to that level of sophistication. So long as human life remains so cheap that we can continue to hire people to do horrible or dangerous jobs, AIs will be no threat to anybody beyond your characters in computer games. I think we may "back into" advanced AIs through rebuilding existing human or animal intelligences into machine structures, but how ethical is that?
