Midmorning yesterday brother Dana and I pile into the car...
MOONSHINE: Adventure! Yay! Vroom!
From Pilot Country we scoot Route 52 to Little Road...
Q-105 on the Radio: Thunder only happens when it's rainin'...
MOONSHINE: Vroom!
Down Little Road to old 54...
Radio: If I have the chance--I'd take her back! As a matter of fact...
MOONSHINE: Vroom!
Out to Highway 19 in Elfers, going south...
Radio: She seems to have an Invisible Touch'eh!...
MOONSHINE: Vroom!
ME: I bet you have no idea where we're going.
DANA: I'm just liking the ride.
So we go out the Alt 19 to Tarpon Springs, cruise the tourist district, and Dana refuses to let us stop there. (I didn't ask him why.)
From there, we go to a hobby store where I had been a regular customer back when I lived in Florida, and where one of the women who runs the place is one of my mother's biggest fans. She wasn't there at the time. We waited for her a while, but she didn't show, so we went on.
Radio: Lowrider is a little slower/Lowrider is a real goer...
MOONSHINE: Vroom!
Back into Pasco County to the Gulf View Square Mall. We part at a multi-decade favorite spot near Macy's (formerly Burdine's, formerly Dillard's before Dillard's moved to the old Montgomery Ward location). Walked both ends. Dana got a pack of Steelers coasters at a sports memorabilia shop but otherwise we were there to gawk more than to shop.
On the road again, Northbound on 19...
Radio (and DANA): ...When she knows that we are two/'Cause I couldn't stand the pain...
MOONSHINE: Vroom!
Through Hudson and Spring Hill to Weeki Wachee, counted both the dinosaurs...Had lunch at the Spring Hill LJS/A&W. Then Pinehurst to Spring Hill Blvd...
Radio: ...I will stand my ground...and I Won't Back Down...
MOONSHINE: Vroom!
Drove the whole thing out to 41 and then turned Southbound to 52 and Pilot Country--
Traffic Jam!
MOONSHINE: Oh noes!
DANA: Police cars all over!
ME: I've never seen this many!
We spent about the better part of ten minutes or so on line till we finally got to the intersection and could scoot to Pilot Country and the end of our sojourn.
It turned out that a standoff happened between Pasco County Police and a bank robber whose getaway car had broken down in the middle of the highway. The cops had to block off the highway and surround him with their cars so he couldn't escape. He held them off with his own gun for five hours before he surrendered...and even then the cops had to search the side of the road for the loot he threw out the window of his car before they could re-open the highway.
Today the plan is to see old friends and long-lost relatives.
