Hey.
I'd been debating in my mind lately whether to buy the copy of Enemy Ace: DC Archives Volume One that's available at the local comics store. I mean, we're talking $50 here. So anyway, I did some research. Of course, the comic books included in the Archive hardcovers are so old that the individual issues--if you could find them--run $20, $30, $50 EACH, so it's still a bargain, since you get ten stories. But how many more would I need to buy if DC decided to publish the whole series?
"Enemy Ace" appeared in (by my count) 56 issues of various DC war comics titles from his debut in Our Army At War to his last appearance in Unknown Soldier, not counting the odd cameo appearance in the superhero books. Strip out the stories in which he co-starred with "Balloon Buster" (and collect ALL the "Balloon Buster" stories in an Archive edition of its own!) and your final number is FIVE Archive books altogether, SIX if you add "Balloon Buster". Since War Idyll and War in Heaven are both already in hardcover collections, they don't need to be included in the Archive...but still must be bought to complete the set. Anyway, this is a chunk of money, but nothing like the chunks of money for the more popular, longer-running titles that are also seeing the Archive reprint these days.
I guess I will go ahead and buy the first one...but supporting the product all the way through? I don't know if I'm that big a fan!
