Read in the Aero-News Network overnight an article about the state of pilots at the airlines. Nowadays, starting pay for flight cabin crew is less than $25000 a year. Which (adjusted for cost of living) is about HALF of what it was 30 years ago when I first got serious about wanting aviation as a career. So if I had a best case scenerio of immediate funding for a return to college and flight training, and went directly from flight school to an airline, chances are I wouldn't have enough of an income over the course of my career (which would be less than 19 years) to pay off the student loans. And then what do I do for a retirement?

I went into this with open eyes and the frickin' goal posts moved. It's not worth it anymore.
