Knowing What I'm Up Against
Oct. 1st, 2007 02:07 amI'm financially nowhere I'd need to be to get started on building a force for the Flames of War tabletop wargame, but at least research, even in this era, is cheap.
Being the Pennsylvanian that I am, I was drawn to the history of the 28th Infantry Division, which was and is the central combat unit of the Penn Army National Guard. In WW2, they went into action in France soon after D-Day and their main campaigns were in northern France (the drive to Paris), Luxembourg, Belgium and the French/German frontier. Their worst battles were at the Hurtgen Forest and the Bulge, where they took the brunt of an enemy division's charge through their lines.
Anyway, my Flames of War Late-War force will probably be based in part on the 28th Division. Just found an order of battle that includes some equipment information. So I know what to shop for and what I don't need. Trucks yes, halftracks no. Stuart light tanks yes, Shermans no. Jackson tank destroyers yes, Scotts and Wolverines no.
I get to have P-61 Black Widows as air support! Says so in the official history! (Insert evil laughter here.)
The next step is figuring out my game army, and how I'm going to get everything I'll need.
