[personal profile] gwalla did NOT tag me, but I'm doing it anyway. I'd kinda done something like it before, but as my birthday is only a couple weeks from New Years, I can claim TWO years that I turned 18! *snicker* And thus, the meme:

1. Go to www.popculturemadness.com.
2. Pick the year you turned 18
3. Get yourself nostalgic over the songs of the year
4. Write something about how the song affected you
5. Pass it on to 5 more friends

Where I come from...1985...

1. We Built This City - Jefferson Starship
(I kinda liked it but at first I didn't connect the song to a "dinosaur" band...the local Top 40 station's DJs monkeyed with it, so I thought it was a local band, not a band older than I am.)
2. Smooth Operator - Sade
(Still one of my favorites.)
3. The Boys of Summer - Don Henley
(We were really into over the top quasi-nostalgic stuff that year, weren't we?)
4. Summer of '69 - Bryan Adams
(We were really into over the top quasi-nostalgic stuff that year, weren't we?)
5. Walking On Sunshine - Katrina and the Waves
(THIS was the top British Punk band of the year? Ain't No Justice.)
6. Glory Days - Bruce Springsteen
(We were really into over the top quasi-nostalgic stuff that year, weren't we?)
7. Axel F - Harold Faltermeyer
(The score of "Beverly Hills Cop" was perfect in context--and annoying on the radio.)
8. Born In The U.S.A. - Bruce Springsteen
(Bombastic, whiny...and ultimately pointless.)
9. Jungle Love - The Time
(My DJ friend lamented that people were always confusing it with Baltimora's "Tarzan Boy". Perhaps a crafty DJ could have mixed the two together.)
10. Crazy For You - Madonna
(I hated Madonna.)
11. Just A Gigilo - David Lee Roth
12. Sea Of Love - Honeydrippers
(Two old school heavy-metal types trying to go older school with varying degrees of sucess.)
13. Into The Groove - Madonna
(I hated Madonna.)
14. You Are My Lady - Freddie Jackson
(Don't remember this.)
15. The Bird - The Time
(Had a horridly silly video...or was that "Oak Tree"?)
16. Relax - Frankie Goes To Hollywood
(My parents hated it because they didn't understand it--or didn't want to. I liked the "circus" version video.)
17. I Want To Know What Love Is - Foreignor
(Evidence of a band getting completely away from what made them famous in the first place.)
18. Money For Nothing - Dire Straites
(An ANTHEM. And rockers poking fun at themselves and their own world.)
19. Everytime You Go Away - Paul Young
(Hated it.)
20. Careless Whisper - Wham!
(A better song than it deserved to be.)
21. Material Girl - Madonna
(I hated Madonna.)
22. Roxanne, Roxanne - UTFO
(Don't remember this one.)
23. All She Wants To Do Is Dance - Don Henley
(Overdosed on the video.)
24. You're The Inspiration - Chicago
(Chicago's songs from this era all blur together now.)
25. Through The Fire - Chaka Khan
(I kinda liked this one.)
26. Heaven - Bryan Adams
(Didn't get into this one when it was a hit. Like it better now.)
27. Freeway Of Love - Aretha Franklin
(Over the top, but kind of fun when it was a hit.)
28. All I Need - Jack Wagner
(Because of him being on "General Hospital" this song got much more radio airplay than it deserved.)
29. Small Town - John Cougar Melloncamp
(He did a live acoustic version of this song, a little slowed down, some years ago, and I like it more than the hit version.)
30. Meeting In The Ladies Room - Klymaxx
(Don't remember this one.)
31. Take On Me - A-Ha
(Oh, that video! And the other two in the set! Wow.)
32. Dancing In The Street - Mick Jagger & David Bowie
(Knockout version [along with Van Halen's], but you have to remember that it was made basically as a promo for Live Aid.)
33. Say You, Say Me - Lionel Richie
(I own "White Nights" on VHS. Nuff said.)
34. The Old Man Down the Road - John Fogerty
(Fogerty's comeback song. CCR ver 2.0.)
35. Cool It Now - New Edition
(Kinda cute song. But just about all of New Edition's songs were cute.)
36. New Attitude - Patti LaBelle
(Fun but got to be a drag. Not surprised that it eventually became a jingle for a drug company's products.)
37. You Give Good Love - Whitney Houston
(Don't recall this.)
38. Private Dancer - Tina Turner
(Underrated song. I still like it.)
39. Centerfield - John Fogerty
(An anthem to young ambition.)
40. Lovin' Every Minute Of It - Loverboy
(I think this was one of their last hits. They just kind of dropped off the radar, didn't they?)
41. Your Love Is King - Sade
(Still like this one too.)
42. Dress You Up - Madonna
(I hated Madonna.)
43. People Get Ready - Jeff Beck & Rod Stewart
(This song bored me.)
44. Rockin' At Midnight - The Honeydrippers
(Varying degrees of success.)
45. In My House - Mary Jane Girls
(Fun song, if a little understated.)
46. California Girls - David Lee Roth
(Varying degrees of success.)
47. Treat Her Like A Lady - Temptations
(?)
48. And We Danced - Hooters
(Thought this song came a little later. ?)
49. I Would Die 4 U - Prince
(Yes, he's singing about God.)
50. You Spin Me - Dead Or Alive
(Have it, and probably don't listen to it often enough.)
51. Invincible - Pat Benatar
(Soundtrack to two melodramas...one an updated "Bonnie & Clyde" in theaters, the other a rip-off of "Top Gun" on TV.)
52. And She Was - Talking Heads
(Cute video.)
53. Smalltown Boy - Bronski Beat
(Don't remember.)
54. Solid - Ashford and Simpson
(Disliked this song.)
55. Running Up That Hill - Kate Bush
(Don't remember.)
56. Everyday - James Taylor
(Remake of one of Buddy Holly's minor songs. Nicely done, tho'.)
57. (Don't You) Forget About Me - Simple Minds
(UGH. Sure, it came from a good movie ["Breakfast Club"] and was worthwhile there, but it's all sludge and [the band admits it!] INANE lyrics.)
58. The Heat Is On - Glenn Frey
(Again, "Beverly Hills Cop".)
59. Basketball - Kurtis Blow
(Barely remember. The radio guys treated it as a novelty.)
60 Some Like It Hot - Power Station
(When Duran Duran exploded, they did so spectacularly, didn't they?)
61. Can You Feel The Beat - Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam With Full Force
(Don't remember.)
62. All You Zombies - Hooters
(Thought this came later.)
63. Fresh - Kool and the Gang
(Hated this one.)
64. Voices Carry - 'til Tuesday
(Didn't like it till I saw the video.)
65. One Night In Bangkok - Murray Head (or Robey)
(Yes, Mike...it's offensive. But it's SUPPOSED to be offensive. And I think the vocalist sounds like YOU.)
66. The Oak Tree - Morris Day
(Q.V. "The Bird".)
67. Dancing In The Key Of Life - Steve Arrington
(Don't remember.)
68. Can't Fight This Feeling - REO Speedwagon
(Bored me.)
69. Suddenly - Billy Ocean
(Bored me.)
70. Wake Up (Next To You) - Graham Parker and the Shot
(Don't remember.)
71. We Are The World - USA for Africa
(When it was announced that this was to be our class song, we all BOOED IT.)
72. Jesse - Julian Lennon
(Don't remember.)
73. Kayleigh - Marillion
(Don't remember.)
74. Lover Come Back To Me - Dead Or Alive
(Hadn't heard of it till I saw it on Night Flight, years later.)
75. Oo-Ee-Diddley-Bop! - Peter Wolf
(Hadn't heard of it till I saw it on Night Flight, years later. And didn't like it.)
Wait a minute! There were some NUMBER ONE songs that aren't on the above list? Somebody doesn't know how to count!

The Add-ons:
One More Night - Phil Collins
(Mom loved this one.)
Everything She Wants - Wham!
(I kinda liked this one, tho' it got played to death.)
Everybody Wants To Rule The World - Tears For Fears
(One of my favorites at the time.)
Sussudio - Phil Collins
(Fun song.)
A View to a Kill - Duran Duran
(One of my top five 007 songs.)
Shout - Tears For Fears
(Played to death.)
The Power of Love- Huey Lewis & The News
(Also played to death. Wasn't into the movie.)
St. Elmo's Fire (Man In Motion) - John Parr
(Wasn't into this movie either.)
Oh Sheila - Ready For the World
(Okay band. They deserved a better shake from the R&B world.)
Saving All My Love For You - Whitney Houston
(Melodramic anthem to being an adulteress. And this was her breakout hit?!)
Part Time Lover - Stevie Wonder
(Hated it.)
Miami Vice Theme - Jan Hammer
(The show wouldn't have been right without Jan's score, I'll admit.)
Separate Lives - Phil Collins & Marilyn Martin
(Still one of my favorites.)
Broken Wings- Mr. Mister
(I suppose I'm living this song, whether I want to or not.)
