Hey.
The hobby store where my local IPMS meets has a large tabletop game section next to the meeting hall, which is also used by gamers on weekends. So seeing the racks of Flames of War stuff is tempting. I saw some FoW runs at Gencon Indy last year too. The point? I know I can't afford to start getting into FoW. But I wouldn't mind getting into the models.
I've been looking at the availability of 1/144th scale aircraft (in addition to the ones that are official to the game itself). Just to slake my curiosity.
1) The most readily handy airplane models in this scale are from Minicraft, and their Chinese knockoffs from Mini Hobby Model.
C-47/DC-3 Skytrain (used by all the Allies, plus Japan)
C-54/DC-4 Skymaster (U.S.)
B-17 Flying Fort (U.S. & Free French)
B-24 Liberator (U.S. & Britain)
Lancaster (Britain)
B-26 Marauder (U.S. and Free French)
B-25 Mitchell (all the Allies)
B-29 Superfort (U.S.)
+P-38 Lightning (U.S. & Free French)
P-51 Mustang (U.S., Free French & Britain)
+P-47 Thunderbolt (U.S., Free French & Britain)
Tempest V (Free French & Britain)
Spitfire V (all the Allies)
Messerschmitt Bf110 (Germany & Italy)
Mitsubishi G4M "Betty" (Japan)
[NEW] Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien "Tony" (Japan)
Aichi E13A "Jake" (Japan)
Aichi B7A Ryusei "Grace" (Japan)
Nakajima Ki-44 Shoki "Tojo" (Japan)
Nakajima C6N Saiun "Myrt" (Japan)
(NOTE: The Jake and the Myrt also resemble aircraft used by other nations in the War, so are particularly useful!)
2) From ARII/MicroAce (and currently out of production, but still in some outlets).
Zerosen "Zeke" (Japan)
Hayate "Frank" (Japan)
Shiden-Kai "George" (Japan)
Type 99 "Val" (Japan)
Type 2 "Rufe" seaplane (Japan)
+Focke-Wulf Fw190 (Germany & Italy)
King Cobra (Free French & Soviets)
Helldiver (U.S. & Free French)
+Warhawk (all the Allies)
3) Fujimi.
Shoki "Tojo" & Raiden "Jack" (both Japan, packaged as a two-in-one set)
4) Sweet.
Macchi MC.200 (Italy)
Grumman/GM FM-2 (F4F) Wildcat (U.S., Britain & Free French)
+Messerschmitt Bf109 (Germany)
[PS: "+" means that the above aircraft has already been statted out in the Flames of War game.]
There is much more beyond these, of course. Older kits. Resin kits. Collectable model sets from Japan in which you don't know what you'll get before you buy...and then there are diecast toys in the scale as well.
If I were building an FoW force, and if it were allowed, I'd only have a token ground force working as forward air control for an air force! That way, I'd get to build the models I want!
Of course it ain't gonna happen.
