Other Things & Mum
Aug. 13th, 2010 01:00 amI haven't posted much about Mum and her condition over here because I'd been working more "traffic" about her on Facebook (she has about 1000 friends there), and because a lot of what she's going through is TMI/likely NSFW/PRIVATE. But the important thing is, she got through surgery on Tuesday fine, and the last three days she's been steadily improving and enjoying loads of support from everybody at Mercy ParkWest. If all goes well she'll be sleeping in her own bed Saturday night.
On Wednesday my sister Lynn came over and I navigated her through Knoxville and was at her side. On the way back, we talked about...well...how badly we were treated by the school system in Florida. She got off okay...academically she was ahead of everything and had no problems graduating even with the artificially high standards that particular school set on its students. But they ran roughshod over me, and I flunked. And for years after that, even though I did go to college and got a degree and had other successes of sorts, the scars of that experience still hurt me decades later.
But my sister tells me not to worry. You never went to jail...you never sired a kid out of wedlock...you never lost a limb...you didn't get shot...you didn't wind up a cokehead like my class valedictorian...life is giving you an A+ even if you don't realize it now...
I've always been known to do fine on standardized tests. I'm going back to school. What will happen this time?
