--It needs a good swift kick!

For some reason the Knoxville RTN affiliate's programming doesn't match what they have listed. And the signal is somewhat wonky (the sound volume is way down).

For those of you in areas that don't have RTN yet, I'll tell you about it: they have a library built around genre TV of the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties. All those "hamburger" shows by Cannell, Belisarius and/or Larson. Western shows on Saturday noonish. The original Battlestar Galactica and the Gil Gerard Buck Rogers on Saturday night. They were supposed to be running the talk program Unreliable Sources the last hour, but instead they had an episode of the Rod Serling horror program Night Gallery.

RTN's web presense is also somewhat wonky, with www.rtnville.com unavailable and www.myretrotv.com still under construction. This is no way to run a network even if you do have Mr. T on your payroll. I pity the fools. :P

Macaroni & Cheese "The Hard Way". Lemme get Mom and have her share the recipie with you all:

I use part cheddar cheese and part colby jack--about 1/3 of an 8-ounce package, grated or chopped in fairly small bits. If all you have is cheddar, it would probably be about 5 to 6 ounces.

In a big pot--a stock pot--I boil water, a healthy couple of shakes of salt, and a little bit of olive oil to keep the macaroni from sticking after it's drained. When the water is boiling briskly, put in two cups of elbow macaroni, or macaroni and other pasta of the same size--like the little shell or spiral macaroni. Boil about 10 minutes, and drain in a collander.

Spray oil into a two-quart size casserole dish--or coat the inside with shortening, margarine or butter.

Layer the drained macaroni--enough to cover the bottom of the casserole--then cheese, mac, cheese, etc, ending with the last little bits of cheese. Give it a good shake of pepper and two good shakes of salt. Pour about 3/4 cup of milk over all--this distributes the salt and pepper. Then sprinkle the top with seasoned breadcrumbs (or plain breadcrumbs with a couple shakes of dried parsley). If you don't have any breadcrumbs, mash some saltines for the top.

Cover with the casserole lid or aluminum foil, bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes, let sit in the oven after you've turned it off until you need to serve.

There you have it!

From May of 2001:

Just a little exercise of sorts. When people hear that you are a science-fiction fan, then they automatically assume one thing or another. So perhaps it's time I was more personal and succinct about what I am definitely not a fan of...

* X-Files (I watched Project: UFO in the Seventies and liked it better)
* Buffy (never seen any of it)
* Highlander (immortals are scum!)
* horror in general (no Freddy Kruger, no Halloween, no Friday 13th, no Steven King stuff, no Lovecraft)
* superhero comics
* sword-and-sorcery fantasy novels (how many times must Tolkien be rewritten?)
* Ray Bradbury's stuff (nothing against him or his work...just doesn't appeal to me)
* Tenchi Muyo and El Hazard
* Evangelion
* Iczer 1 and all the sequels
* hentai stuff/raunchy sex in anime

That's just the stuff off the top of my head. And I should also say that "not being a fan of" doesn't mean "I hate" or even "I dislike".

Since then I've seen a little Buffy but haven't been all that impressed. I should read some Bradbury but I don't know where to begin...other than to avoid his short fiction because the pieces I've seen of his have depressed me in the past. I know I should expand my horizons but again, it's tough to find a place to start from.

More To Come.
