This Writer's Block Entry. Today is the Championship Game for the MLS (The U.S. Professional Soccer leagues) and not only has there been ZERO hype about it on the TV, there has been ZERO coverage of the MLS this year from the local TV affiliates. I bet most people on the street can't name seven out of the fourteen teams in the MLS. I bet you'd have to go to a Mexican restaurant or grocer to find anybody who can name more than five current MLS players. The mass media on the English-speaking side has no use for Futbol. They hate Futbol for the same reasons they love the staccato patterns of basketball, baseball and American football--play stoppage = advertising revenue from commercial breaks. Without the media on the side of the leagues, how can you generate fan interest in any meaningful way?
My fictive mind tells the story of an NCAA American Football star who is snubbed by the NFL draft on graduation, and who decides instead to play a year for an MLS team, since he had played soccer as a kid. I wonder if my brother would be interested in co-authoring something like that. Must speak with him.
PS: Final Score--Columbus 3, New York 1.
