That OTHER Tradition of Thanksgiving--
Nov. 23rd, 2007 08:18 pm--Football. Specifically, NCAA college level American Rules Football.
Louisiana State University's team just LOST in Triple Overtime to the Arkansas team this evening.
This throws a big spanner into the post-season works.
You see, the Top 2 (Division I-A) teams at the end of the season play each other at the last Bowl game in January for the National Championship--and LSU was at #1 in the national rankings before they lost. Normally, I care very little about any specific teams in Division I-A, because I never attended any schools in I-A, but this season I have the South Florida Bulls to root for. Thing is, if they win Saturday's game, and West Virginia stays in the Top 5 at season's end next week, the Bulls will get a Bowl bid...for the first time in that school's history! LSU's loss helps USF's chances.
Sixty-four teams--just under half the teams in the Division!--get to play Bowl games at the end of the year. But it's not enough to just have a winning season...where the team stands in its conference is also important. A team can be conference champion and still not have a chance to go to one of the major Bowls. While all the conferences have guaranteed Bowl slots for champions, not all of them have the same number of slots for the runner-up teams. But if a team that's a member of one conference ends up in the national Top 5, that opens an EXTRA slot for a another team in that conference. West Virginia and South Florida are in the same conference.
Go Bulls. :|
