I just heard via Yahoo! that Mickey Spillane has died. I never read his books, but I did watch quite a bit of the Mike Hammer TV show that CBS had back in the Eighties.

Okay, so I learned that the race cars I had been curious about are called "Classic" Cars...which still makes them difficult to find more information about beyond the three websites I already know: Florida Cracker Classics (formerly the Classic Auto Racing Series), which I linked to in a previous blog, the unofficial site for the Seymour 411 Racetrack (where the two photos below came from), and a site about a league of east Pennsylvania tracks.

So what I know about these:
1) The bodies are fiberglass replicas of ones used by cars of the 1930s and early 1940s, coupes and sedans.
2) The chassis are converted from passenger car chassis, and the same kind as allowed in many "Sportsman" divisions...with roll cages and other safety measures added, of course.
3) The engines are 5.0 Liter and smaller V8s. Some sanctioning bodies require all GM-made hardware (engine and drivetrain) but others allow other makes so long as the makes aren't mismatched (no Ford engines with Dodge rear axles, as an example).

And so, I'm trying to find out who provides the bodies for these cars, and what other information I can. One subject I've been digging into is who makes 5.0 Liter V8s, and this has brought to mind combinations that I'm sure nobody else has thought up yet.

* Most of the Dodge V8s, including all of the Hemis, are larger than 5.0 L. But Jeep Division developed the Powertech/Magnum 4.7 for their SUVs, and Dodge also uses a likeable (if not the same) powerplant in some Ram pickups and Durango SUVs. As for a body, there are two vintages of Willys coupes available in fiberglass.

* Toyota/Lexus has a 5.0 L V8 in the works for upcoming cars and SUVs. The 1936 Toyota A1/AA saloon body looks fairly spiffy too.

* Both Jaguar/Land Rover and Leyland have built V8 engines in the 4 to 5 liter class. Combine the works of one of these with an Anglia or Austin body?

* And then there's BMW, Audi/Porsche and Mercedes/AMG. Perhaps a little high-tech for one of these asphalt-oval beasts, but you never know. As for skinning one, I'd wonder if a Citroen 15 saloon body might fit the bill...I know that's politically incorrect, but the rules require hardtops, and all of the pre-war style Euro replicars I've seen are open-topped sportsters. Otherwise, I guess you could argue for the Mercedes 170 family of sedans, or perhaps the BMW 321/326/327/329 series.

Just a little playful brainstorming.
