Hey.

Just saw ABC's Nightline about a "tragic miracle" involving two cave divers at one of the deepest aquatic caves in the world. One had killed himself over ten years back, the other found his body on the bottom and went back to attempt to recover it.

Normally, I wouldn't be so interested in a story like this, but you see, one of my brother's best friends died while cave diving. The way I heard the story, he panicked when he got lost in silt, then realized he didn't have enough air to make it back out alive...so he wrote a farewell message on his slate for his parents and loved ones. This story has been in my subconscious ever since it happened.

When I was trying to write for comics, one of the stories I thought up was about a cave diver who, grieving for the loss of a loved one himself, tries to commit suicide by going to the bottom of an unexplored cave. He finds some unexpected things at the bottom--among them a reason to survive. This story never got beyond the "tales my mind tells itself at bedtime" stage and I never gave it a title or planned the ending. This was going to be a story that lived as it was written.

Maybe I'll still write it. I don't know. Still have to clear my desk first.
