Am I A Guy? Or Am I Beyond Guyness?
An MSN article about "Guyland", the world of adult men who refuse to socially "grow up".
I recognize myself as not being fully-adult socially, but at the same time see that I'm outside of the world described in the article. Which puts me in the strange position of not only being on the outside looking in, but on the outside of the outside! And I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad one.
I guess the main problem is that there's a generation gap that everybody refuses to recognize--the Baby Boomers and everybody younger than them. So long as the Boomers act young, nobody wants to act "grown". This may change in the next few years once the majority of the Boomers get well into their sixties, but until that happens there is a bizarre absense of roles driving us, especially males.
The fact that I'm in my forties and haven't even gotten near my most cliched ideas of what my adult life would be like from childhood weirds me out and scares me. But at the same time, I don't see many of my peers doing the same either. And I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad one.
